Thank you everyone who has sent in a carrier bag ready for tomorrow. Also to those who have donated some spares. If you have not sent in a carrier please can you send one in tomorrow in case we do not have enough, as each child needs 1 bag to make their ball.

Today we have been talking about the continents and investigating a few different countries, The Gambia, India, Great Britain and Brazil.  We will continue to find out more about some of these countries during the week and then in our next Olympic Week we will be learning more about our own country.

As part of these investigations we have begun to think about people we know who live in other parts of The World.  Some children have already mentioned family and friends who live in Australia and New Zealand.  It would be really helpful if you have links with other countries if the children could bring in a note with the country on.  We can then use a Post-it note to write your child's name on so we can fix this to our big class map and build up a picture of the various countries which year 1 children have links with.  Of course not everyone will know people around The World so when we look in greater depth at the UK in the next Olympic week, beginning 19th March, we will carry out a similar investigation.

Tomorrow morning we are having a visitor to talk to us about bananas and then at 2.30 Kwame is going to show us how to turn a carrier bag into a ball.

Thank you for your continued support

Global Awareness Week

Dear Parents
Sorry for the lack of blogs recently!
Anyway next week we have some activities which are lnked to different countries around the World.  We will be baking some banana muffins, for most groups on Thursday, for you to sample from the "Cafe" on Friday afternoon and will make extra so the children can also have a taste.  We are looking at which countries different foods, particularly Fairtrade, come from and then using the World Maps and Globes to find these countries.  Also as part of our week we will be finding out about bananas, hence the muffins!
On Tuesday Kwame is visiting to show the children some toys made from recycled materials and then showing us how to make a ball from a carrier bag.  Thank you to all those who have already supplied a bag if not please send in a carrier ready to turn into a ball on Tuesday, thank you.
Mr Farrington will be talking to the class about farm animals in India and showing some photos he took on his previous trip to the country.
I'm sure the children will have a great week.
If you have any empty boxes, packets or labels from Fairtrade goods we'd love to look at them and try to find the country bof origin.
Have a good weekend.
Year 1 team
