We are looking forward to the week ahead. Just a quick reminder that we are off to Lorton Meadows on Tuesday. The children will need suitable footwear (there will be lots of walking involved), all weather clothes, hat, water and importantly have suncream on BEFORE they come to school.
We will keep you updated on what exciting things we get to participate in on the trip.

A brilliant reading week
We all had such a fantastic time during reading week. All of the adults in the room shared their favourite stories:
Miss Hancock:
Mrs Hall's favourite book is:
The children really enjoyed sharing their favourite stories with their friends.
On Thursday the children used pictures of their friends in their class to make their own family portraits. These can be seen on the wall by the cloak rooms.
And finally on Friday half of Year 1 swapped with half of the Year 2. Both classes worked on the same activities. The children worked in mixed groups to design and make a story box using a John Burningham book. The outcomes were amazing! You can see their creations in our classroom.
Keep on reading!

Family Portraits, photographers in the making!
We have had another brilliant day looking at a variety of books again today. Some children shared their favourite books with their friends.
Mrs Moger shared some of her favourite stories that were read to her as a child. One of which had lots of Nursery Rhymes in which the children enjoyed listening to.
The children looked at some of the family portraits that they bought in today. After looking at the different portraits they spilt into groups and made their own portraits. They all dressed up and took it in turn to be a camera man. They used a variety of different equipment

Reading week...The magic bed and Trubloff.
This week is a special week as it is 'reading week'. In Year 1 we will be looking at books written by John Burningham. Today we have been reading a book called:
The children worked in groups to act out the story. Then they got to re-write the story, changing the areas in which the bed visits.
After lunch half of Year 1 swapped with half of the Reception class. Both classes looked at the book:
This is a story by the same author. The whole school will be looking at different parts of the story throughout the week. The children looked at Trubloff the Mouse and were set the challenge to make a musical instrument out of boxes, tubes, elastic bands, paper, cellotape and much much more! It was fantastic to see the range of instruments that the children designed and created.
This week all of the adults in Year 1 will be sharing their favourite stories with the children. Today it was the turn of Miss Scott. Miss Scott's favourite story is:

POWSA Social
Hi there guys,
Just to let you know that the next POWSA meeting is being held on the 9th July at 19:45 at the new Wagamama restaurant in Brewery square. New faces are always welcome. We are a small group of committed parents and teachers who enjoy raising money for our school and children, and without all your help and support this just wouldn't happen. However, our core group is getting smaller and smaller and as a consequence recent events have been much harder to organise and run. Therefore we would ask you to seriously consider coming along to the next meeting, ask your questions, find out what its all about and see if becoming a POWSA member is something you would like to do. There is no expectation on your time, we wont sign you up to do anything, we just ask you come along, meet us and enjoy a nice meal. If you do fancy coming would you be kind enough to let a POWSA member know, or leave your name with the school office, just so we can ensure a big enough table.
Hope to see there!

Rhodri's adventures and Purplemash
Rhodri is having a great time at everyones homes.
As you all know the children bring in pictures and stories about the time that they have spent with Rhodri. This morning we had a fantastic account using Purplemash! This is a great tool to use at home with the children. We can then print it out at school and put it on display for everyone to read.
All the children know how to use Purplemash, there are so many brilliant programs on there that will help with all areas of learning.

The shopping list
This week the children have been looking at the book:
They are now able to retell the story using different objects and characters.
In maths this week the children have put their thinking hats on and worked through lots of problem solving questions. We have used a range of resources including dominoes, counters, unifix, bead strings and logic people to support this.
In art the children have been looking at another Georgia O'Keffe picture called 'poppy'. They used paint to capture their interpretation of Georgia O'Keffe Poppy.

Zoo lab visit
Today we had a special visit from the people at the 'Zoo lab'. We were lucky enough to see and touch lots of different animals. Below are some pictures of the animals that the lady bought to show us.
I wonder if anyone can write and tell us anything that they have learnt about the animals?

Musical Soiree
Musical Soiree
This is a short reminder of our Musical Soiree taking place on Tuesday
25th June at 6.00pm at the Dorchester Middle School.
We moved the venue as we have exceeded our school’s capacity! Please also
recall that the performance is not suitable for small children to attend.
Finally, I am assuming that all children are taking part unless you have
informed the office or me?! If your child would like to be involved and has lessons outside of school then please also see me!
As this is the sole concert of the year
expectations are that all children learning music at the school would
endeavour to be there. Thank you! Mrs Mewett

The mystery bug is revealed....
So after many guesses we can now reveal that the mystery bug is.......
A May Bug also known as a Cockchafer.
Wow look at the difference between these pictures!
Che Che Kooley!
We have received some fabulous home learning over this week. One of the children bought in a snail, we looked closely at it and could see the antennae moving.
CHALLENGE
From now on, if you create a model or object please don't forget to write about it! What is it? Where is it from? How did you make it?
Practising your handwriting is very important in Year 1. We often have pages of very neat work, like the page below. A child knew they had to get better at 'f' so practised at home and look at the great result...
Somebody from Year 1 also went home and built a lego model of some insects.

The children were fantastic at singing this song, especially in rounds.

Home learning and insects
We have had some fantastic home learning in today. Well done to everyone that brought in a piece of writing or maths to show us. It is brilliant that the children want to write about trips and visits that they have made at the weekends. Below is an example of some great home learning we have had today.
This week the children are going to be going on insect hunts around the school.
What minibeasts can you find in your garden? Can you write about them?
Family portrait
In preparation for some work that we will be doing the week beginning the 24th June, could we ask the children to bring in a photocopy or a scaned picture of a family portrait. We ask that the children do not bring in the original photos, only photocopies or a printed picture. The pictures will be staying in school.
Thank you in advance.
Year 1 team.
Shape poems, PE and the weather!
The children have settled back now after the first week. Last week we said our goodbyes to Joshua, we will be keeping in contact with him as he moves to his new school.
We were lucky enough to have some fabulous weather last week. We were able to take our learning outside which was brilliant. In PE we have been practising our races ready for sports day. The children started cricket last week, a sports coach will be coming in every Wednesday to teach this cricket session. Lets hope the field stays dry this week!
This week in Literacy we are going to start some work on 'shape' poems.
Just a little reminder about the weather, even though it has been quite hot this week in the morning it has been breezy and quite a lot of children have come in to school without a jumper/cardi. Please can the children come prepared with hats, suncream already on, jumper, coat and water.
