Reading Eggs

This week the children have been working with a internet based Reading Program called Reading Eggs.  Each child has an individual log in and password to get onto the site which they may use at home and at school.  Within the program children are rewarded for progressing through fun reading activities with eggs which they can exchange for items in their avatars virtual world.
As this is the first week the children have used Reading Eggs, I have not set any lessons, so the program will seem very easy.  However once the children have got the hang of logging on and using reading eggs, as their teacher I am able to log in and tailor the program to suit their stage of learning.  There is also a progressive element to the program, so it will get harder the more the children use it.
The children have certainly responded well in class, I look forward to seeing how useful you think the program is at home.

Robin Watch

During our topic about eggs and Quirks we have been keeping watch on a family of Robins who have set up home in Miss Johnson's Mum and Dad's house.  Here is the complete Saga...

Good luck Robins!

This week's learning - 12th May 2014

Another busy week in year 1!  The Quirks have been dressing up, bugs have been hunted and seeds sown.  There has been lots of progress in Maths where we have been using number lines and other resources to help us add two or more numbers together.  The children are becoming much more confident at reading and writing bigger numbers.
We were lucky enough to go into the Life Education Centre on Tuesday morning where Moira, Harold and his friends taught us all about being healthy.  We saw the light up body model and some beautiful stars in the sky above as well as learning how to take care of our bodies!
Next week we will be going Reading Bananas with our trip to the library, group reading as usual and the children are going to begin using a computer based reading programme called Reading Eggs where the children can earn rewards for their reading!

Off to the Library

On Monday we will be walking to the new Dorchester Library to have a look around and take part in a short workshop about our favourite books.  Please ensure your child comes to school with comfortable walking shoes, a coat or sunhat as appropriate, a drink and a snack in addition to their usual school uniform.  We will be taking a casual stroll up through Borough Gardens during the morning and will be back by lunchtime.  If any parents are able to help, please contact the Year1 team.
Thank you.

This week's learning - Week beginning 5th May 2014

What a short week it seems to be with the the bank holiday and then our wonderful trip to the watercress farm!  We had a great day on Tuesday learning lots on our trip about watercress, how it is farmed and looked after including how bats and birds of prey can help the farmer keep their crops healthy.  There were lots of hands on activities that the children really enjoyed taking part in and the highlight of the day for the adults was the rather attractive hair nets we had to wear in the huge freezer!  Please help yourself to watercress supplies outside the classroom - it's lovely and very good for you too!

The Quirks that hatched out last week in the classroom have been keeping us company in the classroom and we have found out this week that they like to explore.  After making passports this week I am looking forward to hearing where the Quirks are going to explore and what they see there.

We have been focusing on number bonds and reading larger numbers in Maths.  In art we have been drawing and tasting exotic fruits as part of our healthy eating project.

Another great week!

Off to the Watercress Farm

Please remember that our first day back after the bank holiday weekend Tuesday 6th May, is our trip to the Watercress Farm.  Children will need to wear old play clothes and have their waterproof coats and wellies at the ready.  Hopefully we will get to bring home some free samples! Yum
