26.3.15- Spring Farm trip

Spring Farm Trip

This morning Year 1 had a fantastic trip to the farm. We went and saw all of the sheep with their lambs and the children even got to stroke them. Hazel taught us all about the different parts of a lamb. We will use this information in our Science lesson tomorrow where we will be labelling a lamb and writing some facts that we have learnt.

As well as learning about the sheep and lambs we also went and saw the cows and talked about the different parts of a cow. A big thank you to Hazel after another great farm trip.

25.3.15- I wonder.....

This week we have been thinking about questions we wanted to ask about the Querks.

Some of the questions were:
I wonder if there are any more Querks?
I wonder where they come from?
I wonder if they have enjoyed their time with us?

Today we were thinking about where we would take the Querks and why.
'I would take Alvar to the park because I like going on the slide.'

Then the children needed to think of something they would teach them.
'I would teach them how to swing high on the swings.'

In Art we have been building up our Easter cards (they look brilliant!) and also making our own sculptures. We went to the round house area and used the natural materials to make our own sculptures. These have been fantastic so far.

In Maths this week we have been counting using money and today we have been giving the correct amount of change.

16.3.15- Assembly this week

This week in Year 1 we are getting ready for our assembly. We hope to see you at 9.20am on Friday in the hall. We will be sharing with you some of the topics we have been learning about.

In maths this week we have moved on to measuring time. The children remembered how to set the time to read o'clock and half past the hour. Some of Year 1 even moved on to quarter past and quarter too. We counted in fives to 60 and talked about why we need to be able to count in fives when reading the time. Tomorrow we will look at important times throughout the day and draw them on a clock face. Later in the week we will be trying to learn the months of the year. It has been really good to hear that some of the children have watches, this will definitely help them with reading the time.

In Literacy we are carrying on our work on 'The Querks' and we will be finding out where they came from and a little bit more about them.

Gruesome Wild Life Club

Today the children dissected some barn owl pellets. The children learnt that these are the regurgitated waste of animals that the owls have eaten and cannot digest. The children opened up the pellets and stuck the bones, fur and skulls of the tiny animals eaten by the owls such as voles, shrews and mice! We did wash our hands afterwards! Come along and see our displays of what we found in the pellets: they are on display in Year 1!

Friday- Comic Relief

This Friday is Comic Relief. Just a quick reminder that we are asking the children to dress funny for money!

In assembly on Friday we will be sharing favourite jokes.  Also after school on Friday we will be having a cake sale. Each class will be baking and decorating cakes. However if you are baking this week or would like to donate some cakes for our sale please hand them to the children's class teacher on Friday.

All of the school have been learning the 2015 Comic Relief Song 'Put on a funny face'. It is a brilliant song and very catchy.

5.3.15- The box has opened!!!

Well we have had such an interesting day in Year 1. The box that we found finally opened. The things inside of it left us notes to there whereabouts and we finally got a chance to see what was in the box! I still don't want to give too much away but the children can tell you all about it!

This afternoon we looked at the Andy Goldsworthy home learning we set in the holidays. Mrs Hall and I were so impressed with the home learning, it was fantastic to see that some children had made their own sculptures using Andy Goldworthy's ideas. Below are some of the sculptures the children made today.

The children worked in groups of 4 to make these brilliant pieces of art work using only natural materials and they even named them.

3.3.15- Our find in the woods!

Today in Year 1 we were walking through our woods when we came across a mysterious box! We don't know who it belongs to or what is inside so we made some FOUND posters and places them around the school.

I will blog later in the week to show you what happens to the box and what we will find!

In maths this week we have been concentrating on measuring precisely using a ruler and a metre ruler. At home maybe the children could measure parts of their favourite toys? They could put them in size order.

World book day- This Thursday

World Book day is on Thursday this week. We have decided not to dress up this year. Instead I would like the children to bring in their favourite books that they can share with their friends on Thursday and Friday. Another idea could be to draw their favourite characters. Why do they like them? What parts of the story is their favourite and why?

Year 1 do really love reading which is so fantastic. Please remember to keep reading both the group reading and library books at home. The library books can be changed in the mornings before school or after school.

How are you going to travel to school over the next 3 weeks??

This week is the beginning of our 'Big Pedal Event' run by Sustrans. Along with a number of other Dorchester schools The Prince of Wales will be competing to see if we can bike and scoot to school the most over 3 weeks. The school with the most amount of participants over the three weeks will win some amazing prizes. So here is how you can help....
Every morning I will ask the children who cycled and scooted to school and this will be recorded down. If someone in their family such as a parent or a sibling (who is not already at the school) also cycled or scooted we will get more points.

As well as a fun competition this is also a great way to boost your child's health and fitness. This half term in our Jigsaw sessions we will be looking at how to be healthy and why it is so important!

Drama day with Simon Stone

Wow what a brilliant week. We ended our week with a drama day with Simon Stone. I was so impressed with all of Year 1 and how involved and eager they were to act. We were looking at the story of

We looked through the story and thought about what we thought Mr Gumpy would act like. We then acted out the story and pretended to be all of the animals. In the afternoon we had the chance to steer our own punts and decorate them for Mr and Mrs Gumpy's birthday.

On Friday the story to write our own stories in our very own books!

All of our drama work can be seen in the Year 1 display outside of our room.
