recycling

Recycling Christmas Cards in the New Year

Please help us recycle your Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust Scheme.
We're asking you to recycle your Christmas cards to help us turn your cards into trees!

For every 1,000 cards dropped in to Marks & Spencer stores for recycling throughout January 2017, a new tree can be planted!

In the New Year, please bring any Christmas cards to the foyer outside the school office where there will be a bin. Do bunch these together and place a slip with the amount you are posting into our bin - this way the children will be able to calculate quickly whether we have collected enough to plant one or two trees. Please do not put loose cards in. The recycling bin will be in the foyer form the start of term. If you can, please do support this worthwhile venture. We will then make arrangements for the cards to be transported to Marks & Spencer at the end of the January 2017.

We wonder how many trees we can donate?!

Technology day (9/12/16)

A ‘Christmassy, art and crafty’ day was enjoyed by all on Friday 9th December. It was the POW school annual ‘Technology day’ when children select three activities in which they wish to create a Christmas themed piece of art/ design work.  The manner in which children moved around the school, worked well within the mixed up age groups was superb. All children were displaying our resilient tortoise in tackling activities and the older children were lending a hand in helping organise the younger children’s work, showing the next steps in how to produce an item. Super skills from one and all! Some products made have been added to this blog.

Thank you finally to all parents who managed to join for some/ or all of the day, the extra pairs of hands very much helped!

Y1 11.12.16- The last week of term information!

Wow I can’t believe that the last week of term is upon us already! I hope the children came home on Friday with lots of excitement about our Christmas Technology day. There were some fantastic creations!

Tomorrow is our dress rehearsal of our play. Hopefully you all have your tickets for the rest of the week’s performance. We are so proud of how hard all of the children have worked on this play and learnt all of the songs.

On Wednesday the children will be having their Christmas Dinner.

On Thursday it is our Christmas party afternoon. If you haven’t managed to put your name on the food list we will have it out in the mornings and afternoons. I know when I looked on Friday we could do with some more names next to sandwiches. After our lunch we will be doing lots of party games.

Finally on Friday the children can wear their Christmas Jumpers with a £1 donation for Save the Children. They are also invited to bring a board game to play. These board games should be something that the children have played before please. Don’t worry if you do not have any as we will all be sharing these games.

Y1 5.12.16- Some information

This week in Year 1 we will be busy practising our Christmas play as well as doing lots of fun learning based around the Christmas theme.

On Friday it is our annual Christmas Technology day. The children get to go to three different activities throughout the day and make a range of things from door hangers to miniature houses! It is a fantastically festive day that the children love. The children should wear normal school uniform for this day but can wear some festive head wear. If you would like to help then please do come and see us.

On the last day of term (16th December) the whole school will be taking part in the 'Save the Children' Christmas jumper day. This is the day that the children can wear their Christmas jumpers for a small donation of £1.

Christmas fair, 2nd December

What a busy, Christmassy feel to the school yesterday evening! The school was full of children and our families making the realisation that Christmas is nearly knocking on our doors!

The school would like to thank you for your support, for the goodies donated and for spending those pennies! All which will be ploughed into making the children's learning and environments a richer place to learn in.

A huge thank you also to everyone who has helped in preparing for the Christmas fair, preparations, laying out and running stalls to tidying up at the end. Thank you to POWSA.

Year 1 29.11.16- Christmas festivities have begun!

This week the children have finished off their map making for half of the class. They had to follow the picture clues to find the mystery house. I must say both groups took some challenging pictures but the children were very observant! We are carrying on with looking at The Jolly Postman in Literacy by making lists, describing characters and replying to some of the letters.  I know it may seem early to you but we have started our Christmas activities (there really isn’t that much time left!). We have been learning the songs to our Christmas play ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’. All the children now know their roles and we will start the practicing tomorrow! Mrs Hall is busy sorting through the costumes but we will let you know soon if anything is needed. The Christmas play tickets are now available from the office.

We will be putting up the Christmas party food list soon. On Thursday 15th December we will be having lunch in our classroom followed by party games and dancing with the other classes. If you wouldn’t mind putting down your child’s name so that we have a range of foods for the lunch. All hot dinners have been cancelled on this day.

Thank you to everyone that attended the phonics sessions yesterday. We hope that you found them useful. Below are the links to the websites which we mentioned in the presentation. If you have any questions or would like the handout that we gave out please do come and see Mr Gibson or myself.

A brilliant website that has lots of videos that the children can watch and repeat the sounds-
Buried treasure, dragon’s den and picnic and Pluto (games we showed in the presentation)

Y1 20.11.16- This week...

This week we will be carrying on with our topic of the Jolly Postman. At the moment the children are making picture clue maps which they will give to their friends to try and find the mystery house. We will therefore be going on a number of short walks for the next couple of weeks.

On Wednesday Mr Gibson and I will be holding a phonics session in the hall at 9am and 3pm. We will be recapping how phonics is taught and how to support your child at home. If you would like to come to either of the sessions please come and see me or just turn up on the day!

Our assembly is this Friday at 9.20am and so we will also be practising this all week.
