YR 1 Parents PSHE Information Session 9am Tuesday 23rd May

As part of our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health education) we follow a programme called JIGSAW. The sessions from September build upon children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of who they are, how they relate to one another and the world in a positive and healthy way. You may have heard of the class’s JIGSAW friend? The summer term units are about ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing me’. Within the ‘Changing me’ puzzle in every year group there are two or three lessons which help children understand the changes that occur to our bodies.
We invite you to attend a session on Tuesday 23rd May at 9am in the school hall, in which we will give you more of an insight into what your child will be learning about and discussing at age appropriate levels.
We hope you are in agreement that materials of Jigsaw are important for children’s development. If you do have concerns please do talk with the class teacher at a convenient time.

YR1 17.5.2017 This Weeks Learning

Firstly, thank you for to all those parents who came to the informal parent information session Monday morning. Those that couldn’t make it should have received a personalised note from me relating to phonics as well as information related to the phonics screening in their child’s book bag. Please do not hesitate to discuss phonics with me over the coming weeks.
Also here is the link I spoke about: http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/Phase5Menu.htm

This week in Literacy we are writing poetry and concentrating particularly on alliteration. Please encourage your child to explore poetry at home and remember they can always bring some in to share with the rest of the class. I sent home spellings on Monday, so please keep practising those at home. Group 1 received alien words this week, not to learn to spell, but to encourage them to practise for phonics screening – especially to segment and blend words.

In Maths this week, we are recapping time and concentrating on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will be doing lots of active activities to consolidate this learning. For example, to encourage counting in 2s your child will be pairing up socks and to count in 5s and 10s your child with be printing their hand print and counting together as a group.

On Monday we had a wonderful Forest School session (even with a little rain)! Some of the children made clay sculptures, please go and have a look at them, they are located at the back of the classroom by the Forest School display.

Yesterday we received a visit from Super Sports a company who promotes fitness and sport in schools. This week your child will receive a sponsor form related to completing a series of exercises on Thursday 25th May. The whole school will also be visited by Grant Fielder a world champion mountain biker! All the children will have a photograph taken with him and if they bring in a special book they can get his autograph as well!

YR1 8.5.17 This weeks learning

This week in Literacy we are baking and then writing instructions. Additionally we are writing poetry and will be using alliteration, so please encourage your children to explore poetry at home when you can. I have handed out spellings from last week this afternoon so please make sure your child is practising them at home, especially as we have the Phonics Screening Tests coming up.

In regards to the Phonics Screening Tests I will be available on Monday 15th May between 9-9.30am to do an informal Parent Information Session in the classroom, so if you have any questions regarding this I will be able to answer any of your questions at this time. A Summer Term Newsletter will be going out later this week regarding the overall learning for this term (including dates for trips), so next Monday will primarily concentrate on Phonics. However, of course please come along with any queries you may have.

In Maths this week, as we are baking, we are concentrating on exploring capacity. In addition we are consolidating our knowledge of telling the time and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. To support your child at home please encourage them to take notice of the time throughout the day and discuss how seconds and minutes are shorter than hours, days etc.

In Science this week we are continuing to explore animals! The children are really enjoying learning about animals so please encourage them to do home learning on this subject and to share what they learn/do with the rest of the class during show and tell.

On Thursday we have a visit from Life Education. They are concentrating on the theme ‘My Wonderful Body’ which should relate to staying healthy. Please remember we are a healthy school and promote your child eating fruit and/or vegetables as a snack.
As it is getting sunnier outside, please make sure your child has a sunhat with them and if you wish your child to wear sun cream, please bring in a labelled sun cream and the correct form which was attached to your last newsletter.

Today during Forest School many of the children did not have the appropriate clothing, so please make sure if your child is in Autumn or Winter their Forest School clothes remain in school until half term. Thank you.

Lastly, as I was unwell last week I never said congratulations to those children who received awards for their efforts for last half term! Well done!
