Y1- Amazing home learning!

Welcome back! We hope you have had a restful half term. Well we were so impressed with the quality of the home learning. Fantastic and creative stories, helmets, catapults, pictures and castles!! The children were so proud showing them off today. We have started our castle topic and have lots of exciting learning planned. Some of which will involve an afternoon where we invite you all to join us (more about this soon).

In maths we are looking at shape. The children are using shape to make pictures and will be looking at the features of shapes.

Forest School for Spring and Summer Group will start on Monday afternoon- lots of warm clothes needed please.

As you are aware this week we have introduced your child to Mathletics and after half term we will give them a laminated card with their usernames and passwords on so you can use it more at home. Over half term, please keep doing learning with your child orientated towards number bonds to 10 and 20. So even if in the car your shout out the number 4 and they have to tell you the other number (so 6) to make 10. They are getting quicker at this, but some children need more practice, especially up to 20! Also please get creative over half term with the home learning!!

There is a change to our Class Assembly. To confirm it is going to be on Friday 17th November, but at 2.30pm!!! Once we have finished you are welcome to sign your child out and go early. The reason for the change is that it is school pictures in the morning which we cannot rearrange. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Y1- 18.10.17 Home Learning for the half term... how creative can you be???

Home Learning for Year 1

After half term we will be focusing on the topic of ‘Castles’. We would like to set an imaginative home learning challenge for you over the half term holiday. We would like you to create something linked the theme ‘Castles’. Below are some ideas
·        - Write a story about a castle or who lives in a castle (Kings, Queens, Princes etc)
·        - Find out some information about a castle
·       -  Make a castle (what would you use?? Lego? Cardboard?)
·        - Design a dragon
·        - Make a wizard
·         -Design a coat of armour.

The possibilities for this challenge are endless! We would like you to use your imagination and be creative.
All of the home learning should be bought in on the first day back (Tuesday 31st October)
We can’t wait to see what you will all make/ write!

Y1- Mr Potato head is full!!

Well done to all of the children in Year 1 who have worked together in many aspects throughout the past weeks to fill up their class reward (Mr Potato head). The Year 1 team asked the children what it is they would like as their reward during their choosing time and we had a number of suggestions from a party to a chocolate fountain!

We have decided that during our choosing time on Wednesday afternoon we will put a movie and have some sweet treats such as popcorn to snack on. The children may bring in a small cuddly toy for them to snuggle up to whilst they watch the film.

Y1 16.10.17- Learning this week in Year 1

This week the children will be retelling the story of The Three Little Pigs using a story map.
The map is a selection of pictures which aid the retelling of the story.

They had a visit from Pandora the magical pixie who gave them story telling powers! They were fantastic at this today!

In Maths this week the children will be taught how to use the online maths resort Mathletics. Once all of the children have been taught how to use this we will send their logins home for them to complete the challenges at home. I will also send a parental guide. The more challenges the children complete the more points they receive. Once the children have a certain number of points they will get a certificate which we will print off and present at school.

Y1 16.10.17- Leaf wreath making

In Forest School today we collected lots of different shape, size and coloured leaves to make an Autumn wreath.

After making our wreaths we went and sat in the roundhouse and we discussed what it was made of and who might have lived in it. The children were amazed that the people in the past would not have had a Tesco to visit!

Y1 Forest School- Looking after animals in the Winter

Yesterday in Forest School we spoke about animals in Winter that may need some help to collect food and for a warm dry place to sleep. The children worked in pairs to make bird feeders out of pipe cleaners and multigrain hoops.

Then we collected the empty hedgehog houses that year 4 made a couple of years ago. We spoke about what the hedgehogs might want in them and then the children collected leaves to fill them up.

Y1 10.10.17- This week in Year 1

This week in Year 1 the children will be writing about their trip to Poundbury. They have all come back with fond memories of the trip and the photos look brilliant. Thank you to Fry's that put on a fantastic spread for the children and must have had a lot of tidying up after! We will also look at what type of house the children live in.

In maths this week the children will learn about number bonds. Below is an example of the bonds we will be learning and there is a song they will learn.

If you haven't already signed up for parents evening please see the whiteboard in the classroom for a slot.

Y1- Wacky Hair Day- THIS FRIDAY!

Just a quick reminder that the Children's Voice have decided to support the Weldmar Hospicecare in Dorchester by taking part in their Wacky Hair Day this Friday for a suggested donation of £1.

We can't wait to see some of your wacky hair and look forward to putting some on the blog for you to see!

Y1- This week in Year 1- Poundbury trip info and Forest School.

This week in Year 1 we are carrying on with our learning about homes. We started the week with some group work. The children worked together to think of some 'I wonder' questions about homes from around the world. Today the children wrote facts about these homes. I wonder if your child can tell you about the houses? What were they made out of? Who lived in them?

Forest School yesterday was fantastic! The children risk assessed the area and then went on a hunt for the colours of autumn.

After this the children went on a bug hunt! They found a variety of different creatures including spiders, ants, caterpillars and slugs.

Remember Thursday is the Poundbury trip. Children to wear school tops, long home trousers and comfortable trainers and a coat. Children to bring a small backpack to carry their drink and snack. It is on a building site so please be aware the children may get dirty.
