Happy half term!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say that I hope you have an amazing half term! I feel sad that we had to cut this week short, however, I am glad that we are all staying safe.

We have had have such an amazing week in year 1 and I'm sure the children have told you all about it.

Monday started with some exciting visitors who came to do a STEM workshop with us. Children got to create their own windmill and learned how these can generate energy to create electricity.

On Tuesday we made our own toys out of recycled materials. Most of the children wanted to take them home to show you! Apologies if they are taking up a lot of space in your house!

Yesterday was our favourite day of the week. We had some really special visitors from Teach Rex come in to teach us all about Thomas the gorilla. We learned all about how his habitat was being damaged and how he was saved from danger. We then had a workshop with them which involved learning about how to use a greenscreen. All the children enjoyed this so much and loved making friends with Thomas.

As we had to close early we were not able to send home any spellings or RWI books. However, please encourage reading at home with books you already have. Also, keep on practicing the spellings we gave out last week as we will be having a spelling check on these after half term. We would have had a spelling check today!

The home learning task is to write down or draw a picture relating to what your children already know about Space. This is our topic for next half term.

Just a reminder about World Book Day. This is on Thursday 3rd March. We encourage children to come dressed as their favourite book character. Also, all hot dinners are cancelled for this day, so we are asking for children to come into school with a packed lunch wrapped up like a book.

Have a great half term and we will see you on Tuesday 1st March!

What have Year 1 been up to?

Hi everyone, hope you all had a great weekend despite the miserable weather today! One more week before half term, we can do this!

I just want to start this blog by saying thank you for joining the parent consultations, it was great to have a chat with you about your amazing children. Sorry about some of the technical difficulties we experienced!

Your children have been extremely busy in the Year 1 classroom and have showed some great attitudes to their learning!

In Maths we have been continuing with subtraction within 20 and we are moving on to numbers to 50. At home it would be amazing if you could support your children with numbers to 50 and also their number bonds to 10 and 20.

In Literacy we have been focussing on a book called Cleversticks and the children have produced some great writing about this. We focussed on the theme of resilience which the children show every day!

In Science we have been looking at which materials float and which ones sink. We also did a great experience which involved using crazy soap that the children loved.

On Friday Year 1 and Year 3 collaborated to have an RE morning. We had a range of activities happening which were making challah bread, using Purple Mash to explore different Judaism projects and also decorating the star of David. This was a great opportunity for collaborative learning and all children enjoyed it.

We also had a chopstick challenge in the classroom this week where children were in groups and competing against one another with challenges involving moving things from one plate to another using chopsticks!

Tomorrow marks the beginning of our STEM week and we have so many GREAT things planned. We have a range of special visitors coming in which I will update you on throughout the week. We will also be holding a protest outside the school tomorrow so please come ready to support us! SAVE THE ROUNDHOUSE!

Just one last thing. Please ensure children are practicing their spellings at home. This will really help to support them in the classroom. One parent recommended an app called 'squeebles' which is an app that supports children with the learning of their spellings. This is available on all app stores and costs £4.49 if you wanted to download this. Also, we have lots of RWI books not coming back in. Please can you make sure children bring these back in on a Friday.

Thank you as always for your continued support,

Last week in Year 1!

Happy Sunday everyone, I hope you've had a great weekend.

We have had another very busy week in the Year 1, which has been full of fun!

We have been celebrating Chinese New Year and the children have produced some excellent pieces of work. We started the week with a Chinese Dragon workshop which was AMAZING! We also learnt about how the chinese zodiac signs came about and produced some INCREDIBLE writing about this. We also had the opportunity to try some chinese food and we got our own fortune cookies.

In Maths we have been continuing with subtraction within 20. Please continue to practice numbers bonds to 10 and 20 with your children at home as this will be extremely beneficial with the learning we are doing in class at the moment.

In Science we have been continuing to look at everyday materials and we have been experimenting using different materials to make the best boat. We investigated whether cold water, warm water or fizzy water was the best to help their boats float.

Number day on Friday was a success and all children looked great in their Maths costumes/clothes! Thank you for the effort put into this.

Coming up this week are parent consultation evenings. I have seen that a lot of you have already signed up for this, if you haven't already there are still some slots available.

Just a reminder that RWI books and home learning books are due back into class on a Thursday or Friday. We seem to have a lot of RWI books not coming back. If this continues we will not be able to send them home anymore.

Any questions or anything you'd like to talk to me about please email me! Thank you as always for your continued support!
