A fantastic finish for Year One

 Hello Year One Families

What a truly fantastic finish to our half term we have had this week.

On Monday we celebrated our heritage day with some of our children sharing their own heritage with the rest of the class. The confidence with which they spoke and the proudness they showed was just so lovely to see.

We also had a visit from DEED where we learnt about the footballer Mo Salah from Egypt. We found out he showed great perseverance to become the footballer he is today. We also tasted dates and apricots with differing opinions on whether they were nice or not!

In PE, the children practiced their throwing and catching skills, showing great hand eye coordination and lots of fun too! 

On Tuesday, in history, we welcomed some special visitors to finish our learning about the history of the Prince of Wales School. Former pupil Tom Easterbrook and former member of staff Sue Howell came in to answer questions about their time at the school. The children also took them on a tour to show them what had changed since they left. 

We also learnt about settlements. We learnt about Maiden Castle, the Celtic Farmstead (in our school grounds) and the new settlement of Castle Park.

We finished our collage and weaving topic in art by completing 3 different weaving techniques using card, ribbon and natural materials. The children showed great perseverance and were totally absorbed in making their creations.

On Thursday, we had a great day out at Abbotsbury subtropical gardens where we became tree and plant detectives. The children used all their scientific knowledge to investigate deciduous and evergreen trees as well as wildflower and garden plants. They even tackled the rope bridge, which was quite a challenge!

And finally, I have no idea what we were doing in this picture but it really did make me smile. The children and the Year One Team have had a truly fantastic last week of this half term.

Sunshine, art and science in Year One

 Hello families

At last the sun has come out (apart from the downpour earlier!) and we have been enjoying being outside.

In science this week we were able to get out in the forest school area and learn a bit more about plants. We dissected a flower and looked at all the different parts including the leaves, stem, anther and petals. We also investigated if all seeds are the same and completed some very intricate work by finding as many different seeds as we could. They were extremely tiny and it took lots of skill to look carefully at the different seeds.

In art we learnt about the African American artist Faith Ringgold who uses quilting to produce artwork based on her experiences. The children used their collage techniques to create their own picture. There was lots of ripping, cutting and layering and they all produced a wonderful piece of work, which they will bring home some time soon.

Mrs March thoroughly enjoyed using the new pritt sticks to get the artwork stuck together!

                                                   

In PE, the children got out onto the field and had a game of hockey. Striking and defending the ball.

In English, the children have been learning about singular and plural and when to add 's' or 'es' to the end of words. They have also learnt what a noun is. Their writing is really coming on and most children are remembering how to spell key words correctly as well as adding full stops and capital letters. 

In maths we have started learning about fractions and this week we learnt about half and quarter of an amount and a shape. This was fun to do practically and is perfect for meals that include pizzas and cake at home!

School Trip to Abbotsbury - Thursday 25th May

Don't forget we are off to Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens on Thursday. If you would like to help please let me know. We cannot provide transport to get there but there is the possibility to car share. We will meet helpers there at 10am and would aim to return to school at around 3pm.

Heritage Day - Monday 22nd May

If you would like to take part in this then you can dress in clothes from your heritage. You may also bring in objects from home that signify your heritage too. The children will be offered the opportunity to talk about this during the school day. If you are not wearing cultural clothes then you should come to school in uniform. 

I can't believe there is only a week left and we will soon be in our final half term together. This year has flown by!
