Week 4 in Y1

Hello Year One Families

We begin with a big thank you to Miss White who taught the Year One class today. The children loved their art lesson where they reimagined the art work of Alma Thomas using spring colours and painting techniques.

They also thoroughly enjoyed their superhero, comic relief inspired dancing! The children learnt a dance, then made up their own in groups to show to the rest of the class.

The children are really enjoying our new story 'Stanley's Stick' by John Hegley. They have produced some great writing about what Stanley might do with his stick this week. This led nicely into our forest school learning where the children got to make their own colouring pencil stick using a potato peeler to peel off the bark into a point. These will be coming home with the children next week.

The children have come to the end of their unit of learning about numbers to 50. They worked practically this week to represent different numbers to 50 using deines (tens and ones), writing the number, drawing the number and writing it into a part part whole model. They are gaining a really good understanding of how numbers are made up of ten and ones. Next week we move on to length and height.

In geography we have been learning about maps and a birds eye view. After having a look on Google Maps and learning about symbols, the children created their own class map. They were so engrossed in this and created a wonderful map together.

Next week:

On Tuesday afternoon from 1.30pm - 3.30pm we will be visiting Maiden Castle Farm for lambing. If you would like to help on this trip then please do let us know.

Have a good weekend and see you all on Monday.

Week 2 in Y1 💫

 Hello Year One families

In English we have read to the end of our story 'The Comet'. The children loved finally getting to the end of the story and finding out that Nyla would be happy in her new home.  You can watch the story together here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNmPLQnhZ_o

The children have spent the week writing how Nyla feels about moving home and we even managed a bit of hot-seating where the children became Nyla and answered questions. The children's writing skills go from strength to strength and many are writing excellent independent sentences using full stops, capital letters, finger spaces, adjectives and the conjunction 'and'. There's so much to learn when you become a writer!

In maths we have just moved on to a new unit of Numbers to 50. The children are beginning to learn the composition of the numbers to 50 e.g 35 is made of 3 tens and 5 ones. They are also learning to say and write numbers to and from 50. We will be practicing counting back from 50 next week as this was a bit tricky, especially as we moved from the numbers ending in 0 down e.g from 40 to 39, 30 to 29 etc. You can practice at home using this video:

In science the children worked in teams to describe a season and what was good about it. They then shared their ideas with the rest of the class. It was lovely to see how confident the children are in front of one another.

Forest School looked fab this week. The children learnt about animal habitats and then they went out to discover some habitats for themselves. At the end of the session the children got to make some mini habitats of their own. Mrs Surtees, our forest school leader was very happy the children actually got to go outside this week!

In art the children created the own Kandinsky inspired paintings. They colour mixed all the secondary colours themselves after learning how to do this the week before. We were really impressed with the results.

The week ahead:

As part of World Book Day we have some mystery readers booked in to read to us next week which we are very excited about.

World Book Day - Thursday 7th March

  • Come in to the classroom with your child for the first 15 minutes (8.45am - 9am) to read a story with them.
