last day of term...

Firstly, thank you for the lovely gifts and cards from the children and yourselves; we are very lucky to have such a lovely class. We feel we have got to know them well now over the last term can't wait to get Year two off to a cracking start!
The children have been told they can bring in table top games tomorrow, loom bands is also okay, the children know that everything needs to be named and they are responsible for putting things away. Also, we had a good discussion or two today about making sure we don't bring in best, valuable items which we would be upset if anything happened to them?!
Finally, we will be giving your child a reading challenge bingo tomorrow, it is just some fun but also help to keep reading highlighted (as we've told the children that although they're on holiday they can continue to practice in fun ways!).
(Any handwriting practice would be also advantageous!).

Happy holidays everyone,

Mrs Mewett, Miss  Johnson and the Year 1 team

Reading Challenge

This morning we had a visitor from the Dorset Library Service who came along to share the Library's summer reading challenge - Mythical Maze.  The reading challenge is a free activity for all children to promote reading and enjoyment of books.  To complete the challenge children must choose and read (or be read to) six books from the library during the summer holidays.  During the challenge the children will collect various goodies including bookmarks, posters and stickers.  If they complete the challenge within the time they will also receive a certificate and medal as well.  More information can be found at: http://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk.

It would be great to see as many children as possible joining in this year.

Healthy to be me week, ending...

Completing the week of 'Healthy to be me' Year 1 have read a story about 'Smartie the penguin' staying safe when using the internet. The children produced some great eye catching posters on Purple Mash.
We then moved onto Road Safety, keeping us safe when walking, rules about crossing the road, 'stop, look left and right and listen' (only when accompanied by grown ups), also how to use pelican and zebra crossings. The children created their own road system, with traffic lights, roundabouts, pedestrian crossing, a busy system!
The day ended with a big skipping fest!

Our creepy crawly suprise

After filling the marble jar this week, year 1 were rewarded with an amazing Bugfest!  The children were introduced to many minibeasts from hissing cockroaches to rock scorpions and from giant millipedes to a 12 ft boa constrictor.  A big thanks to Nick, from Bugfest for making the day such fun.  Well done year 1 for earning your reward and taking part by holding all the creepy crawlies.  Pictures to follow!

Set our sights to Year 2 today!

This afternoon we spent our time in the Year 2 classroom working with Mrs Webb, Mrs Brooker and Mrs Mewett. We got to know each other very well, played some games which were great fun! We also found out a little more about each other; what our hobbies are, what we like to eat, what makes us smile and laugh, etc. The children then made their own booklet which we will have on display as they join Year 2 in September.

Well done to musicians...

I just wanted to say well done to all musicians who have performed over the last two weeks; they have shown true skills in developing their confidence in performing, showing good progress over the school year and enjoyment in learning! Thank you also to parents for all the support; it truly makes a huge difference.

Brilliant Butterflies

Eventually all 5 of our butterflies emerged and flew to freedom first thing on Monday morning.  Well done year 1 for letting your butterflies free!

Back from India

Year 1 had a fantastic time learning about India last week.  We started the week with workshops with Mr Farrington about Indian animals and enjoyed talking about the many artifacts we had on display.  On Tuesday we spent the day working with Angeli, Mr Farrington's friend from India who taught us about India, Customs, Dance and Costume.  We ended Tuesday afternoon be doing some art work including printing, Rangoli and decorating our names written in Kanada.  We were also extremely lucky to taste Indian food cooked for us by Mrs Mathew... it was delicious!  Later in the week we wrote postcards, cooked rice patties, made banners and investigated Rangoli patterns more before we ended the week with our dance celebration in the hall.  We hope you had the chance to come and see us, but if not the art work we created is still up and you are most welcome to come and see it.
