YR1 Fair Trade Fortnight

Over the next two weeks, it is Fair Trade Fortnight and the children in Year 1 will be looking at what is meant by "Fair Trade".

We will be concentrating specifically on bananas and researching into how they are produced. We will be looking at unfair and fair trade and considering the impact this has on peoples wellbeing and happiness.

To support Fair Trade we are going to be encouraging your child to bring in healthy Fair Trade snacks, like fruit!

YR1 Design and Technology - Puppets

In Design and Technology this half term Year 1 will be making puppets!

They will all be individual, but in order to do this we need lots of support from adults as some children will want to sew their puppet together, where as others may want to use a glue gun!

If you are interested and available this Thursday at 2.15pm then please come and talk to me. Winter group will be sewing their puppets and having a few extra hands would be a great support.

In the coming weeks there will be plenty of other opportunities to support the other groups, but I cannot specify exact dates and times yet as the weekly timetable may change. However often Topic is on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Thank you for all your support.

YR1 20.02.2017 Week Ahead

Welcome to the second half of the spring term! I hope you had a good half term and your child was able to make a creative thing to show this week to start off our new topic – Traditional Tales. I have seen some already and I am very much looking forward to discussing their creations! We will be sharing them in class this week.

This week in Literacy we will be discussing the story ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’ ready for Pancake Day! Your child will be writing in role as well as writing a persuasive letter to Cinderella inviting her over for pancakes.

We are planning on making pancakes the following week as this links to our maths learning – measurement. This week we will be recapping ruler knowledge and introducing capacity, ready for making pancakes! At home if you could continue to challenge your child to measure objects using rulers or their hands (just make sure they are using rulers correctly) that would be fantastic.

Parent Teacher Consultations are on Tuesday afternoon/evening this week. I still have some spaces so if you did not see Mrs Thorpe before she left please sign up asap. Also if you have signed up please double check your time slot so the evening can run smoothly.

YR1 Big Write

Please can you discuss this picture with your child. It is from the book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. We will discuss this book on Tuesday and then on Wednesday your child will be expected to write independently about it. They may want to create a completely different story inspired by this book/picture or write the words for the current story as it is wordless picture book! There is no right or wrong way of doing this.

These questions may support them:

-         Can you remember what happened in the story?

-         Which was your favourite page in the book?

-         Why did you like the book?

-         If you were to write a sentence for the picture above what would you write?

-         If you were to write a story inspired by this picture/book what would happen?

-         If you could draw a door to anywhere where would you go?

-         Why would you go there?

If you want to see the book yourself or show your child again you can by searching on YouTube ‘Journey by Aaron Becker’ and a video of the book will come up!

Thank you!

YR1 Week Ahead

This week in Literacy we will be doing a Big Write. We will use the book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker as a stimulus and then Year 1 will be encouraged to write independently inspired by this book. To support your children’s writing we hope you will be able to discuss this book with them on Tuesday evening prior to their Big Write on Wednesday morning. I will post a separate blog about this and send a letter home on Tuesday with more information enclosed.

This week is our final week learning about space, so keep encouraging your child to bring in space themed home learning for show and tell! We still need a few more kitchen towel tubes (not toilet roll tubes) for Design and Technology so please keep bringing them in! On Friday afternoon we will be having a space themed party to finalise the topic.

In Maths this week we are continuing to learn about measure. Last week they all did really well, so this week we will using rulers and measuring tape to measure a variety of things and discussing unit of measure. We will be encouraging them to problem solve and use their reasoning skills to answer questions related to measure.

Remember this week is the last week before half term and it’s a 4 day week!
