Mathletics has set us a challenge competition! Over the next two
weeks we will be working towards helping each child achieve enough
points to get a certificate. If there is enough participation we might
stand a chance at winning one of the prizes on offer for our school!
The purpose of this challenge is to familiarise the children with the
new look Mathletics website. Please could you help out by using your
child's Mathletics log in with them at home? Or you could try the
Mathletics app on your tablet. There will be an opportunity for each
class to access mathletics at one playtime per week as well as through
their maths lessons and ICT time. Let's see how many points we can
earn! If your child is uncertain of their log in please ask a member of your child's class team.

Year 1 and Year 3 STEM Activity
Today the children in Year 3 combined with the children in Year 1 to take part in some practical designing and building activities.
Working with Miss. Kinkead, the children had to make bridges out of various different play-construction materials. The strength of their bridges was then tested by applying weights.
With Mr. MacBean, the children had to use newspaper and masking tape to make towers that were as tall as possible.
As well as learning about the importance of combining effectively with members of a team, the children learned about various engineering ideas including measurement, strength, balance and support.

YR 1 Week starting 19th June
Next week is STEM
week, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. As you
already know on Thursday Year 1 will be
dressing up as mad scientists and in the afternoon from 2pm all parents
are welcome to come into the school to join in with our learning. As the
home learning letter stated, on Thursday afternoon Year 4 and Year 1 will
gather in the hall and present their inventions
and each child will be able to vote for their favourite and awards will be given.
On Friday we will
be going on the River Lab Trip, just to confirm these children’s mums (Daphne,
Robyn, Kurtis, Phillippa, Imogen) will be coming along to support! Thanks you
so much for offering up your time it will make big difference. Thank you also
if you did offer, but we can only have 5 parents on the coach! Please read your
letters details, especially about clothing and sun protection etc.
For the rest of
the week we are going to continue our learning about money and we are going to
investigate into how water travels up a plant. We will write up this experiment
and compare results on Thursday. On Monday we will be learning about engineering with Year 3 and will be making bridges and towers!
Please remember to
put sun cream on your child in the morning before they arrive at school and
make sure they have sunhats with them.
Also please can your child bring in a baby
picture of themselves asap for a Jigsaw lesson on Thursday.
Thank you

YR1 This weeks learning
In Science last
week we planted some seeds and are doing an ongoing investigation into what
plants need to grow. Two of plants are receiving water and sunlight, two are
receiving water but no light and two are receiving light but no water. Over the
next few weeks the class will be monitoring these so please ask them questions
at home to develop their understanding.
This week in
Literacy we will be continuing to learn about plants and animals. We will be
learning about different habitats using non-fiction books and the internet and
then consolidating our learning together. I hope by the end of the week each
child will have described a habitat in detail.
This week in Maths
we are going to be continuing to learn about money. Last week the children
started to think about the value of different coins and notes and we will be
developing their knowledge of this throughout the week. We will be also be
solving addition and subtraction money problems and counting in 2’s, 5’s and
10’s using money. As I mentioned last week, keep exploring money at home, for
example could your children write a money word question?!
Phonics Screening
is this week, please do not mention this to your child as I am going to make it
seem very informal, just like a 1:1 phonics session (with stickers!). This will
hopefully make your child feel relaxed so they can do their best. If you have
any further questions about this please do not hesitate to ask me.

YR1 Home Learning - STEM Week
Year
1 Home Learning
It is STEM
week (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) from the 19th to the
23rd June.
TASK:
Design and MAKE a new invention
- You could create an incredible spinner like we did in class, but adapt it in some way...
- You could invent something brand new!
- You could look in a Science book and create something based on an invention in there…
Think about why things are
invented: they are to help us in some way, or to make our lives easier in some
way……could it be a kitchen gadget, a camping tool/gadget, something for school,
something for pets……be as creative as
you like!
Your
invention needs to be in school by the Thursday 22nd
June, because you will be showing your parents and the Year 4’s at
our Mad Scientists Inventions Fair!
Monday 12th June - Bike Breakfast
“Bike Breakfast” at the Prince of Wales School!

YR1 6.6.17 This Week
Good morning,
welcome back! I hope you have had a great half term and been able to enjoy the
sun and explore the outdoors.
This week we are commencing
our plant topic, so this afternoon a few children will be planting some seeds
and we will be monitoring them for the next few weeks and discussing what
plants need to grow. Our Literacy this week is going to tie into our topic so
will be linked closely with science and are reading The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle.
Please encourage your child to learn/investigate about plants and animals at
home and if they do learn some interesting things please encourage them to
share this with the class during show and tell.
In Maths this week
we are exploring a variety of areas. Today we are consolidating our learning of
fractions and developing your child’s knowledge of quarters. Later this week we
will be recapping how to read and write written numbers up to 100 and we will
also be problem solving using money. As money is a part of our everyday lives
whilst out shopping with your child please encourage them to work out how much
items may be/let me count change etc. And remember maths can also be shown in
show and tell!
This week we will
be concentrating on phonics and in particular split-diagraphs (a-e ‘cake’ etc).
So please practise these every evening this week if you can, especially as
Phonics Screening is next week. Remember you can play ‘Buried Treasure’ on
Phonics play. Here’s the link: http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/BuriedTreasure2.html
Even though the
weather isn’t wonderful today, it is summer term so please remember your child
needs a sunhat with them every day and preferably sun cream applied before
coming to school on especially sunny days.
If your child is
in Spring or Summer they will be starting Forest School next week! I am sending
a letter home today about this so please check your child’s book bag.
Also this Friday
it is a non-uniform school day and our Summer Fair will be on Saturday. We
still need volunteers, so please get in touch with Julie Lane (Stephen’s mum!)
or sign up at reception.
