Week 3 in Y1

 Hello Year One Families

We had another busy week of learning in Year One last week. Here are a look at the highlights.

In history we have learned about Neil Armstrong's life and how to organise a  timeline. This week we combined our knowledge by starting the lesson recapping the significant event in Neil's life onto a large timeline. We then worked in groups to act out and freeze frame different parts of his life.

In maths we learnt about one more and one less and used tens frames and rekenreks to show our learning. We have also been learning about number bonds to ten. The children should now be able to recite their number bonds to ten in order.

In science we completed an investigation looking at which materials float and which materials sink. We learnt the word 'prediction' and had a go at making our own predictions based on our knowledge of materials (from previous lessons).

The children had another great Forest School where they began with a game of hide and seek and then moved on to building habitats, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Don't forget:

We have our wheeled wonder exhibition of learning on Wednesday from 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and join us for this session.

Wednesday 31st January at 9am - Mastering Number: Parent and Child session

This session is a great way to find out how maths is taught in Y1 alongside your child. The session begins in the hall with Mrs March (10 mins) and then your child will join you for the rest of the session (35 mins), where you can learn and play maths together.

We look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Algorithms (Computing)

Today in Computing we worked on ALGORITHMS with Mr Spracklen.

Our aim was to understand the functionality of the basic direction keys in Challenges 3 and 4 (on Purple Mash) and to understand how to create and debug a set of instructions (algorithms).

Some of us worked on algorithms using our floor robot -

We all had a great lesson together.

Bring on next week!

The week in Year One

 Hello Year One Families

You will see that the children have come home with quite a few bits of paper today. At our Parent Information Session this week a few parents asked if they could have a copy of the rhymes we use to help children form the letters so I have sent this home with the children today.

The children have also come home with a story map and words that we have been learning in class as part of our English over the last few weeks. The children should be able to tell you most of the story by using the pictures to help them. I am no artist, but the children know what they mean!!

In English we also had an unexpected visit from Neil Armstrong who we asked lots of questions and also shared lots of facts that we have already learnt about the moon landing. The children also got the chance to be an astronaut themselves.

In maths we have been learning and investigating teen numbers. We spent part of the week using tens frames and rekenreks to show teen numbers. We used the stem sentence ____ needs _____ to make ____. For example 10 needs 5 to make 15.

In history we learnt about the life of Neil Armstrong and found out how to make a timeline using different dates. We found out when Neil was born, some key points in his life and then when he died and put these dates in order.

Although Forest school was rather cold this week the children had a great time exploring the ice.

Don't forget these upcoming dates:

Wednesday 24th January from 2.30pm - Wheeled Wonder Parent Event. Everyone welcome.

Wednesday 31st January 8.45am - 9.30am - Mastering Number Parent Session. Come and learn how to support your child with their maths learning. There will be 5 weeks of home learning following these sessions.

Thursday 8th February - Dress like an astronaut day.

Can you help?

We need eggs boxes (that hold 6 eggs). Please could you drop off empty egg boxes to Y1 please.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Year One are back!

 Hello Year One Families

We have had a great first week back at school with so much new learning.

In English we have begun to learn a story about Bob, The Man on the Moon. The children have spent this week starting a story map which helps them remember the words to the story. We will be finishing it next week and then sending the children home with their story map and words. You may find they want to read YOU the bed time story next week!

In maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have learnt the names sphere, cube, cuboid, cone, cylinder and pyramid. These were tricky words to remember so we will continue to remind the children of these names over the coming weeks. The children also revised their knowledge of 2D shapes circle, square, triangle and rectangle.

In DT the children have started to learn about wheels and axles in preparation for our wheeled wonder event that you are invited to on Wednesday 24th January at 2.30pm. They investigated different wheeled toys and looked carefully at how they moved.

In Forest school this week the children learnt about recycling and why this is important. They were then challenged to come up with an invention that would help our environment using recycled materials. The children came up with some great ideas.

In science the children have started a unit of work on materials. This week the children's task was to identify a range of materials such as glass, plastic, fabric, metal, paper and wood. The children had a big pile to sort through and discuss. They also learnt the words, opaque, transparent and waterproof.

In history we have started learning about the history of space by finding out about the moon landing. The children learnt the names of the astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins. They also learnt about the space shuttle Apollo 11. They found out that there were 3 parts to it: the command module (Columbia), the lunar module (The Eagle) and Saturn V.

Such a busy first week back and we have loved every minute!
