The week in Y1

 Hello Year One Families

In maths we have been learning about grouping and sharing as part of our multiplication and division unit. We encourage children to use stem sentences to support their understanding. For instance, this week we used the sentences: There are ____ groups, there are ____ in each group, there are ____ altogether. The children used a variety of resources to show their understanding. This really has helped to embed their learning. We are now moving on to fractions, with a focus on halves and quarters (pizzas and cake at the ready!) 

In art we finished our Mola collages, based on an art form from Panama. The pictures are usually made from fabric and sewn on to clothing. The children chose an animal last week and this week added detail around the edges. They used the skills of layering, cutting and ripping to create some beautiful collages.

In science we went on a hunt for wild flowers and garden plants. We also investigated if all flowers were the same. We found out that lots of them looked different but they all had roots, a stem, petals and leaves. 

We are also working hard at our phonics, using real and alien words to practice looking for special friends so that we can read unfamiliar words. Every morning from 8.45am for the next few weeks we will be focusing on this. Please do try and be there as the doors open so the children can get practicing. 

Don't forget our trip to Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens is on Thursday 25th May. If you would like to help, please do let me know but remember you will have to make your own way there and back.

Our week in Year One

Hello Year One families

Another week has flown by in Year one and we have continued to enjoy our learning together.

This week in maths we have been learning about arrays. This has helped us to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. We also learnt about rows and columns to make an array. You can make arrays at home using all sorts of different things. Why don't you have a go? Frozen peas are always fun to use, as long as they don't roll away! The pictures below show the children making arrays, writing repeated addition number sentences as well as a multiplication number sentence. It has been really great to see how the children are linking previous maths learning to this newly acquired knowledge.

The children had another go at hockey this week and they are certainly improving, hitting the ball with more skill. They are really enjoying being back outside for PE.

In history, we got out the photo albums to use as sources of evidence to learn how the school has changed over the years and to look for what has stayed the same. We have photo albums of the school in all stages of the build. The children were really fascinated by the photos. They were confounded when Ms Johnson came in and showed them a photo of herself in one of the albums!

In art we are learning about collage and this week we learnt about Mola art from Panama. One of our collage techniques is layering so the children have begun to collage an animal using this technique. Next week we will be adding to it by ripping and cutting. Again, the children were engaged in their learning, using lots of concentration when cutting out.

And finally, the children logged on to Purple Mash to investigate the maths section on the computer.  It takes time and skill to be able to log on and navigate the computer programme and the children are doing really well at this.

What a packed 3 days we have had in Year One!

Another busy week in Y1

 Hello Year One Families

Last week was filled with lots of outdoor learning and fun.

In science we planted some sunflower seeds so we can find observe their growth over time. We are hoping to have 30 great big sunflowers in our outdoor area by the time we finish for the summer term! Each week we will check on their progress and make sure they get plenty of sunshine and water to help them grow.

We are also making the most of the summer term by learning about plants in our forest school sessions. This week we learnt about trees. We began the session by doing some bark rubbings and then made our own trees out of things we could find in the forest school area. We labelled each part of the tree: trunk, root, branches and leaves. 

In maths we are learning about multiplication and have been learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. We then grouped different resources and counted them, writing a number sentence to go with them.

In PE we tried our hand at hockey. It was quite tricky to hit the ball with such a long stick but the children had a really good go!

In Computing the children learnt how to log on and use Purple Mash, which was a big hit! 

We are hoping to have Accelerated Reader up and running soon so please bear with us while we get the children to complete their initial assessment. If you require any of the other log ins please do let me now as I have a list of the usernames and passwords for each child.
