This week's learning - week beginning 28th April

You may have heard that some eggs have mysteriously appeared in the year 1 classroom.  This week the year 1 children have busily been making nests in order to care for the eggs in hope that they hatch out.  Fingers crossed!
We have also enjoyed a trip to Maiden Castle Farm this week where Hazel taught us all about the names of mummy and daddy farm animals and their babies.  We also got to see the sheep and their lambs as well as some tractors at work.  The children listened very well and asked lots of questions furthering their understanding of farms, animals and the countryside.  We found tracks in the mud, sheep's wool and cow hairs as well as enjoying the puddles on our way back to school.  Thank you for providing your child with wellies and waterproofs!
We have started our summer topic of minibeasts this week and have enjoyed some sunny afternoons in the front garden looking for living things!

Parents information session

There will be a Parents' information session for Year 1 on Wednesday 30th April at 9am in the Staff Room.  Please come along to find out about what Year 1 will be learning about this term and to gain further insight into Group Reading.  A class news letter will follow next week detailing trips, topics and other important class information.  I look forward to seeing you there.
Apologies for the late notice of this blog.

Farm Trip Tomorrow!

Tomorrow morning we are heading off to Maiden Castle Farm so please remember to wear your Wellington boots and wear a waterproof coat!
We will be looking for the mummy sheep and their baby lambs and talking about what happens on the farm in the springtime.  I am sure we will have lots of interesting photographs to post so keep looking on the Year 1 blog!

Welcome Back

Year 1 had a fantastic start to the summer term yesterday. Everyone worked really hard and the classroom was busy with lots of wonderful learning going on. In Literacy we read "Ah, said the stork" by Gerald Rose and the children worked well talking and listening to each other in their talk partnerships about their story and came up with some fantastic ideas about what they would do with an egg if they found one! We investigated numbers and number lines in Maths, creating our own number lines and thinking about BIG NUMBERS! The biggest we came up with was 1,000,000,002, perhaps you know a bigger one! The children had certainly been working on their reading over the holidays and all the children will be getting new books from the fabulous new look library over the course of this week. In the afternoon the children were able to explore learning through play and also investigated primary colours and colour mixing in art and made some fantastic symmetrical prints! So I think you'll agree - we've been super busy and we're looking forward to heaps more learning fun this term.

Year 1 ICT lessons...

The children have been working tremendously hard this term on learning coding skills as well as using ICT to enhance their literacy and creativity stories.

A lovely piece of work which you can view is on Purple Mash ' My Story', the children have created their own traditional stories. This is a fab piece of software which enables the children to write their story, draw own pictures and animate, choose background, lots more to discover. They have their password so can access this at home. If you're using a IPAD or tablet device then you will need Adobe Flash player to be able to use this effectively.

I have seen two excellent home learning stories created - so maybe over the Easter holidays you could write an exciting story together!? Maybe about minibeasts, getting ready for the summer topic?!

Easter Egg Colouring Competition

Easter Egg colouring competition.  All entries need to be with the school office by Wed 2nd April, to allow sufficient time to judge the entries and to hide them in the shops!  Sorry for any confusion caused.
