Bugfest=amazing!
Well what an exciting morning we had this morning. As we are doing a topic on animals at the moment we got Nick in from Bugfest. He was really impressed with the children's knowledge of animal groups, they could even explain the difference between an amphibian and a reptile!
First of all Nick showed us Frank his Giant African land snail then he went on to show us 'Big Bertha' who us a millipede with 256 legs!
After the cockroaches came the stick insects. These were not your average size but more like the size of your hand!

Then we saw the hissing cockroaches. These creatures are clever as they pretend to hiss like snakes so that their predators the rats do not eat them.
This is he desert hairy scorpion which was too dangerous to hold!
For the next visitors in the room the adults needed to show how brave they were...
The next spider was a bird eating one which was a bit lively for us adults!
Mr Kill was next. This poisonous centipede cannot be handled but was so interesting to watch move along the branch.
The final two animals that the children got to touch were the bearded dragons and the favourite, the boa constrictor.
A huge thank you to Nick from Bugfest, we learnt so much about the animals and will definitely remember this morning!

End of the health and safety week- e safety talk and RNLI lifeguards
On Wednesday this week we had a visitor talking to the children from the police. They spoke about how to stay safe when using technology such as ipads, game consoles and computers. It was really interesting to hear some of the websites that the children said they use. She taught the children the rules of using the internet and what they should not share.
On Thursday we had two RNLI lifeguards in assembly teaching us about how to stay safe on the beach. The children learnt what the lifeguards wear and what all of the flags mean.

Our fantastic trip to the Watercress beds.
Well yesterday we went to the Watercress beds. After a delayed start we got to the Watercress company got straight in to learning about how watercress is grown. The children enjoyed jumped around in the watercress beds and then looking at what Tom fished out of the river. We saw an abundance of creatures.
After a quick lunch break the children got to bunch the watercress.
Then we got to see what they use to keep the pigeons off the watercress... birds of prey! Tony showed us his barn owl, falcon and hawk. The children were amazed and curious about these beautiful creatures. Tony then flew his hawk for the children to see. Finally we got to go in to the factory to see where the watercress and salad is stored and even taste it in the fridge! A huge thank you to Tom and James from the Watercress company that arranged lots of activities for the children to do and made the day very fun.
Thank you to all of our parent helpers who came. I know the children really enjoyed the trip and I hope they have told you about it! If you want to see all of the photos from yesterday please go on to the school website, class photo gallery and year 1.

Trip tomorrow
I hope you are enjoying this glorious sunshine! The met office however have forecast lots of rain tomorrow! Please do make sure that your child is in wet weather clothes and will probably be best in wellingtons anyway as we sometimes step into the water beds.
Many thanks

Health and safety week 9th - 13th May
The children will be exploring aspects of staying safe and being healthy over the next week in class. We will be welcoming visitors to the school; RNLI will be visiting to run a Beach safety assembly with tips and key messages about being safe. We also are welcoming the Safer School Team who will be running sessions with each class about staying safe when online at age appropriate level. We also have the Life Education van in school on Tues and Weds (10th and 11th) and each class will access a session based upon the PSHE curriculum for their class. In class, the children will be talking about road safety as well as being healthy and linking this to their science topics.
Lastly, on Friday 20th May each class will be accessing children appropriate levels of first aid training kindly offered by St John's ambulance. Yr 4 will be running through the programme and hopefully completing the course for a certificate!
If you do have questions or some skills or time to offer do speak with the year team.
Thank you, Mrs Mewett

Please check your recycling- Eco!
As part of our DT topic on wheels and axles the children will be designing and making their own vehicle. In order for us to do this we are in need of some kitchen roll tubes. It is important that we only have kitchen roll tubes please.
Next week we are off to the Watercress farm. This is a fantastic trip where the children learn about how watercress is grown, see a falconry display and have a talk by a bat specialist. Thank you for the offer for helpers we have enough support for the day now. All children need to be in home trousers, wellingtons and depending on the weather raincoat, sun hat and possibly even sun cream!
I have updated the photos of the children learning on the school website. If you go to the top of the website and click on class photo gallery you can see year 1 doing a number of learning activities such as our joint sessions with Reception on resilience.
