Meeting a sculptor and developing artistic skills

 On Thursday we met Nick Mackman, an award winning sculptor. She showed us her amazing sculptures and gave us some handy hints about how to create our own animals using clay. We are looking forward to trying this out next week. It certainly inspired lots of children to go back and try to improve their skills again. It was fascinating to see how the children's models were adapted and made even better using the techniques they had been taught. We began the week using salt dough and ended the week using playdough. . . . next week we move onto clay.

Marvellous Marwell!

 What a fantastic trip we had to Marwell Zoo on Wednesday. The children had a wonderful time exploring all Marwell had to offer. We listened to some talks about the animals, learning about zebra, oryx and rhinos as well as a visit to the Tropical House to find out about the rainforest. 

The children got to see lots of large and small animals up close and a visit to the play park couldn't be missed!

Marwell Zoo Reminder - what to bring and wear

 Hello Reception families

In case you are unsure, please can children wear their Prince Of Wales jumpers/polo tops and then whatever is comfortable on the bottom. Children can wear trainers, school shoes or sturdy shoes as there will be lots of walking. Children should have a backpack that they can carry with their lunch (if you are providing it) as well as a bottle of water. Don't forget to be at school at 8.45am and we will be back around 5pm tomorrow.

A wonderful week and Marwell Zoo reminder

 Hello Year One families

What a wonderful week we have had at school. The children visited drawing club and wrote code words and sentences about an animals favourite food and what other animals might live in the zoo. We have practiced our letter formation of c, a, o, e, f and g this week too.

In maths we have learnt about counting back and one more and one less.

We have nominated our Pupil Voice(s) for Year One. Congratulations to Jack and Yasmine.

We also nominated our Eco Crew. Congratulations to Nellie and Ralph.

The children will attend meetings and represent our class for this term.

We have also been learning in lots of new ways around the classroom. This week we:

 Practiced our model making skills ahead of our 'zoom' with Nick Mackman next week. 

Learnt some more facts about different continents. Keep the home learning coming in . . . we are enjoying playing 'Guess the continent'.

Independently practiced our maths learning by sorting objects, using a tens frame, counting and making 1 more.

We wrote to the zoo keeper to tell him what animals we could see.

Investigated animals and their groups (often using magnifying glasses).

Built animal enclosures - inside and outside.

Marwell Zoo

Don't forget we are off to Marwell zoo on Wednesday 21st September. Children should arrive promptly at 8.45am as we will be leaving at 9am. Please make sure your child is packed for all weather! This includes a raincoat, suncream and a sun hat. Please provide you child with a packed lunch and snacks for the day. If you have ordered a lunch we will take those with us. A bottle of water will also be needed.We aim to be back at school at 5pm.

If you have volunteered to help on the school trip please could you confirm you are coming  either via email or on the door on Tuesday.

An amazing start to Year One!

 

Hello Year One families

What an amazing start to the school year! It was so lovely to welcome all the children back to school. They have settled in well to the very familiar routines and have been enjoying some new Year One learning.

We have begun our drawing club sessions which promotes writing skills and language acquisition. One of our favourite words to use this week has been the word 'elongated!' You will undoubtedly hear many new and interesting words being used over the coming weeks. It has been such a pleasure to see the children excited about the opportunity to come and write and talk about their learning in drawing club this week. 

We have also begun some new learning in our Power Maths sessions. This week we have been working on grouping numbers and counting to ten. The children are building their skills in how to count accurately and grouping numbers to 10 in different ways.

Our topic this term is Our Wonderful World. The children have already learnt the names of the 7 continents (they may have already been singing the 7 continents song to you at home!) and we will be learning some facts about each of the continents over the coming weeks. They have also begun to learn about animal groups: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects and fish.

Amongst all this, they have also been leading their own learning through our play project work. Here the children immerse themselves in 'Busy Time' following their own interests as well as planned for learning opportunities, collecting counters to add to their play project planner over the week.

Our new class ipad arrived at the end of the week so there will lots of photos of the class enjoying our new surroundings next week.

Parent Information Session

Hello Reception families

We cannot wait to welcome you back to school on Monday. The classroom is looking fabulous (even if we do say so ourselves!) and we have a fantastic, new outside area to play and explore in. There will be lots of familiar routines and Mrs March and Mrs Rogers will be there to welcome everyone in. We are also excited to have Ms Browne as the class teacher on Fridays, as well as Miss McCourt (TA) supporting learning on a full-time basis and Mrs Stockman, who is a trainee teacher and will be with us on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays each week.

Here are a few reminders:

Snack:

We will not have delivery of fruit/veg until next week so please provide your child with a snack until then. The government provides a free piece of fruit or vegetable to every child, every day. There is often a choice of fruit/veg, mainly apple, banana, pear, tomato, carrot. If your child does not like this fruit, then we ask that you provide them with an alternative. The school's preference is that it is a piece of fruit or vegetable that they do like, rather than something in a packet. Please do come and talk to us if this is a problem.

Water bottles:

We ask that you provide you child with water in their bottles each day to keep them healthy and hydrated. 

PE:

Our PE days this term are Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure that your child has a labelled PE bag with all items of clothing and footwear labelled too please. We are lucky to have Mr Treble for both these sessions, so lots of fun and interactive physical development to be had!

Topic:

Our topic this term is 'Our Wonderful World' where we will be learning about animals and the continents and oceans. Please look out for the knowledge organiser coming soon that will give you more details about our topic and how you can help your child with their learning.
