This week in Year 1...

This week in Literacy we have been learning about speech bubbles and speech marks. The children have been writing their own sentences about a story. In maths we will be doing lots of timed challenges to see how long they take so that we can record the time.

Today Year 1 and Reception teamed up for a 'resilient' session. There were 6 activities set up which would challenge the children. They had to work together to ignore the distractions, become absorbed and persevere.  They all worked extremely hard so well done!

This afternoon half of the class started the DT topic wheels and axles. They have designed their own car and will get to make it next week. The other half of the class worked with Mrs Hall on some Andy Goldsworthy inspired art work which looks fantastic!

Praise assembly

We had so many people to praise in assembly this morning. The children have been working incredibly hard to be resilient learners. The following children have been praised this week;
Harry G for his phonics
Eva, Jack, Inzi, Sunny and LilyRose- for being conscientious learners when writing
Jasmine, Josie, Matilda and George- for brilliant measuring in maths this week.

We have had a really fantastic week and I look forward to hearing what you have all been up to this weekend. Spellings will be out on Monday so please recap the sounds that they children have already learnt. Maybe the children could write a story about the weekend?

Space seeds update...

We have now made a display for our space seeds and they have started to grow! The children have been helping to water them and next week we can measure the growth.

The space seeds have arrived!

This morning we received a package with our space seeds in! The experiment is being run by the Royal Horticultural Society's campaign for school gardening and the UK Space Agency.
The seeds have been in space for six months and were returned to Earth in March by the former commander of the space station, Scott Kelly.
The aim is to learn more about the effects of weightlessness and radiation on seeds in order to develop plant varieties that can be grown on long space missions. We received two packets of rocket seeds. One was red and one was blue. Tomorrow we will sew the 200 seeds and then we will spend the next 35 days recording measurements and sending our data to the UK and European space agency!

Learning for the week ahead and a reminder about Tuesday morning.

Last week in maths the children were measuring length using non standard units such as cubes and a ruler. This week in maths the children will be weighing and comparing weights of objects.

On Tuesday (9am) I will talk through the phonics screening check that we do. So please do keep on practicing spellings with your children and encouraging them to write and read. When they do writing at home please support them to use the sounds on the sound mat they have already learnt.

In History last week the children learnt all about the Lord Nelson and the importance Dorchester was in delivering the importance news of the victory.

Spring trip to the farm!

On Thursday Year 1 went to the farm. They saw where the hens lived and got to feed them. They also saw the farms new addition. The chicks were incubated and hatched on Easter Monday.

After we looked at the chicks Year 1 went and saw the cows in the cow shed and learnt about the different type of cattle they have on the farm.

Then we went in to the lambing shed to meet the new arrivals. There were lots of lambs in there the children could look at up close and everyone seemed to really enjoying looking at them.

A fantastic Spring trip to the farm, Thank you Hazel!

Big Pedal starts Monday 18th April

Just a reminder that we are taking part in "The Big Pedal" again this year. We would like to encourage as many children as possible to come to school on their bicycles and scooters.
The competition lasts for the next two weeks.
In the last two years, the Prince of Wales School as achieved a very high percentage of scooterists and cyclists. We are hoping to achieve the same again in the competition this year.
Parents who scoot or cycle with their children can also earn points for the school.

A visit in assembly from 'Iron Man!'

A very exciting assembly on Wednesday, when 'Iron Man' made a visit to The Prince of Wales School!

The school have been focussing upon building our Learning Powers and our current particular focus is ' Resilience'. Iron Man presented the school with a knitted turtle which is our school mascot for 'resilience'. In class this week the children have been working upon how to 'grow our resilience' within their individual learning.
'Being absorbed', 'managing distractions' around them and 'persevering' are key areas we have all been thinking about developing with each others' help.

Building Learning Powers- Are you a resilient tortoise?

Today the children have learnt about Building Learning Powers. As a school this half term we are all focussing on the learning power of Resilience. Today we looked at the story of 'The tortoise and the hare' and explored how we can be resilient. We spoke about the 4 main strands of; absorption, managing distractions, noticing and perseverance.

After play the children worked on two activities. One was based around the story 'Only one you'. The children were read the story about how it is ok to be unique and how if they come across difficulties in life they can overcome them by trying something new. The other activity was to complete an obstacle course, blindfolded! This took the skills of managing distractions and absorption to enable them to complete it.

At the end of the morning we discussed how the children will try to be resilient in class and using the 4 B's will overcome obstacles in their learning.

Misplaced clothing!

Please can you all have a look for Jack's blue hoodie. It was misplaced at the end of last term when he was getting changed for Forest School. It is more than likely to have gone home with someone in Autumn or Winter group.

James has also misplaced his PE top, again please could you have a look for these at home please. Both have names in.

Many thanks
