Lovely few days!

To continue on our Harvest theme this week, yesterday afternoon we have been tasting cheese and learning how it is made! Their reactions were priceless and I think some children learnt to like a new cheese! Here are some pictures for you:

Yesterday we had Praise Assembly and the Year 1 Team decided to give the whole class a massive praise and add another bit to our whole class reward system (Mr Potato Head!). This is because the whole class were fantastic on Tuesday when unfortunately we had to miss our farm trip.
Additionally, all week the whole class have been showing how they can be our caterpillars! Especially co-operative caterpillar as we have seen the whole class working so well as a team and supporting each other’s learning.

I hope you enjoyed the Harvest Celebration this morning. I could tell the children had a wonderful time and we certainly enjoyed it! I hope you also enjoy some delicious baked goods in the Harvest CafĂ© this afternoon and I hope you had a chance to look at your children’s wonderful artwork.

We still need helpers for our Poundbury trip on Thursday (9am - 12.30pm). Please let a staff member from Year 1 know if you can help! Thank you!

Y1- Learning about animal homes in the classroom!

It was very disappointing having to cancel the farm trip this morning. However we did not want any accidents in the slurry that was blocking our path to the farm!

Hazel (from Maiden Castle Farm) came in to school and spoke to the children about the different types of animals homes. We discussed what we needed in a home and looked at pictures of the animals homes. Hazel also bought in straw and barley to show us and the model combine harvester!

We have been busy cooking apple and sultana flapjack and making our harvest artwork ready for Friday. All parents are welcome to watch us sing two songs that we have been busy practicing on Friday morning and then come and sample our delicious treats in the afternoon from 2.30pm.

YR1 22.09.2017- updated

What another brilliant week!

Four children this week have particular outstanding so were praised in Praise Assembly. Those children are:

- Max for his efforts in Maths (he has tried very hard learning about greater than and less than symbols!)
- Isaac S for his phonics and spelling this week!
- Riley and Isaac C for their determination this morning practising their cursive writing!

Well done.

Lidi currently have an offer on for wet weather clothing so take a look if you need some! Forest school will start on the 2nd of October, after the community day.

Also there was a slight mix up with which day Mr Gibson’s dodgeball club was on! I can confirm it will always be on Tuesdays! He apologises for any inconvenience.

We have had a great day today, making chairs in Desgin and Technology and Winter even did some cooking! They made yummy Apple and Apricot Filo Parcels.

Have a lovely weekend.

20.9.17- Year 1 information

Thank you  to everyone that made the parent information sessions. Most of the information was in the newsletter. The only other thing we discussed was home learning. We are happy for most things to be shown but it must come with writing. This writing should be phonetically written. For example if your child wanted to write the word hope they would use their phonics mat and they would probably write hoap. This is phonetically correct and what we encourage at school. Please feel free to get a copy of the phonics mat from our classroom, Mrs Hall has lots of copies.

Forest school will now start on Monday the 2nd for Autumn and Winter

Finally the farm trip is on Tuesday the 26th. If you can help please see a member of the Year 1 team

Many thanks

Year 1 and 4 collaboration mornings

This week in Year 1 we have had some collaboration sessions with Year 4. We worked together to write a letter to Prince Charles asking for his advice and support for our Forest School Area. The children worked brilliantly together writing a letter and drawing pictures of our school. We are looking forward to hearing back from His Royal Highness!

We will post some picture of the groups and example letters soon.

YR1 Praise Assembly

The whole of Year 1 are settling into Year 1 brilliantly! It has been fantastic seeing their personalities grow this week.

Five children in particular have really stood out for their efforts this week.

A big well done to:

-          Elliott for his hard work in Maths!
-          Elsie for her constant conscientious attitude all week!
-          Jacob for his independent work in Literacy writing about our story Owl Babies!
-          Mia for her best effort in Group Reading and her growing confidence!
-          Seth for his focus – especially in a new class!

Give yourself a huge marshmallow clap at home (teach your parents what that is) for being amazing! :)

Have a lovely weekend.

Y1- Home learning and trip help

It has been brilliant to see lots of WOW moments and home learning being bought in. Please do keep this coming! The children can bring in things (not too precious)from home but we do encourage them to write about them. For example if they wanted to share a model that they have made they could take a picture and write about how they made it or what it is. This presents a perfect opportunity for you to sit down with your child and help them to phonetically sound out their sentences. We will be sending home a copy of our cursive sound mat and alphabet to help with home learning.

Thank you so much for all of the house pictures we have had in. Just a reminder we would like these pictures by Monday (18th) please. You can print them, send them in on a usb for us to print or you can email me b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk.

We have a couple of trips coming up which we would like some parent support for. The farm trip will be the morning of 26th September and a trip to a building site in Poundbury will be the 5th October. If you are able to help with these trips please do come and tell any of the Year 1 team.

Y1- Introduction of a new book and some brilliant music!

Today in Year 1 we introduced the story 'Owl Babies'. Throughout the week the children will sequence the story and make their own owls which they will then use adjectives to describe.

In Maths we will still be focusing on number formation, sequence and also thinking about more, less and equal. Noticing numbers in the environment is a fantastic way to remember the numbers but also to see how they should be formed. Why not take some pictures of numbers in your house? Or on a walk around a supermarket?

This afternoon the children watched the men from Dorset Music Service perform to instruments. I wonder if your child could tell you something that they played? Or some facts that they were taught? There will be a letter coming home soon about how to book music lessons.

Just a few other notices. Tuesday (19th) is the Y1 parent information session in the hall. If you are unable to make this meeting then do not worry as everything will be covered in the newsletter.

Harvest assembly- 29th September in the hall. You will have a chance to watch your child perform a song/poem as part of our harvest celebrations. They will also be invited to a Harvest cafe in the afternoon. More information about this to follow.

Lastly, I just wanted to inform you all that we will be starting Forest School later than usual as the Forest School area is not ready to be used at the moment. I will put a notice out when this will be.

Many thanks

YR1 End of first week!

Wow!! What an amazing first week! Everyone has settled in brilliantly and coped well learning all about the ins and outs of being in Year 1!

In literacy we found out about what everybody has done over the summer (it seems like lots of children went to Cornwall!). In Maths this week we have concentrated on place value. We have been learning to count forwards and backwards to 20 and have been practising writing and reading numerals. It has been a joy getting to know the class and Mrs Thorpe and I cannot wait to see them next week.

Year 1 Parent Information Session will be on Tuesday 19th September between 9-9.30am. Mrs Thorpe will go through the learning for Autumn Term during this.

Once again, please do not hesitate to ask one of the team if you have any queries!

Year 1 - Computer Science with Mr Spracklen

Today we had our first Computer Science lesson with Mr. Spracklen.

We talked about the risks and rewards of using the internet and listed those devices which we have in our home that can go online. We could name a lot of devices!

We then went on a hunt around our school to find our E-Safety display.

It wasn't in the greenhouse...

It wasn't behind the wall...

In the end, we found the special display in the entrance to the I.C.T suite.

We all produced our own 'E-Safety Poster' to remind us of our S.M.A.R.T code -

6.9.17 Y1- A fantastic first day meeting Cooper!

Welcome to Year 1!
It was fantastic to see how enthusiastically the children came in this morning.

This morning we recapped on how we can be a resilient tortoise in our learning. We met Cooper the tortoise and the children got to stroke him. He was a highlight of the children's day and they enjoyed watching him move around and eat his food.

We started writing our holiday news remembering the importance of having capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in our writing.

Throughout the week your child we be receiving a new reading record and also a group reading book. If you have any questions about these please do come and ask us.

Many thanks
