YR1 24.3.17 This coming week.

This coming week in Literacy we will be doing another Big Write, based on the wonderful pictures within ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. I will not be revealing the story to the children until after the Big Write, so even if you have this book at home please do not share it with them. However, you can support your child by discussing the picture they bring home on Tuesday evening.

These questions may support you:

• What is going on in the picture? 
• What do you think is going to happen?
• Can you describe the boy?
• Can you describe the woods?
• Why do you think he is going into the woods?
• What is happening in there?

-        What normally happens in woods? Is it like Little Red Riding Hood?

Some of your children will be using a different stimulus for their Big Write, but I will inform those of this in the week.

In Maths we are focusing on addition and subtraction. We will have a particular emphasis on solving pictorial addition and subtraction questions. Additionally, we will be counting and solving sums using twos, fives and tens. To engage the class we will be using ‘One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab’ by April Pulley Sayre and Jeff Sayre. I am hoping this story will spark your child’s interest to create sums at home using pictures within the story!

Next week is our final week making puppets for our Traditional Tale Topic. As we want to get them all finished before the end of term any extra hands would be much appreciated! On Tuesday 28^th and Thursday 30^th at 2.30pm we will be working on them, so please come along. Just let one of the Year 1 Team know.

YR1 20.3.17 Week Ahead

This week, in Literacy, Year 1 are finishing writing their own version of the Three Little Pigs. We will then be looking at the book Fairytale News and writing our own headlines for Traditional Tales. Our headlines will include alliteration and exclamation marks. Finally this week we will be exploring compound sentences and the use of conjunctions.

In Maths we will are learning about 2D and 3D shapes, as well as using instructional positioning language like, next to, to the left of. Please keep pointing out shapes to your child at home or even ask them to put something back in the cupboard and use instructional positioning language like ‘Please put the jam in front of the peanut  butter!

Please continue to practise Phonics with your child at home as it really does support their Literacy progress. Doing it little and often would make all the difference. On the last week of term we will be informally assessing your child again so hopefully we will see an improvement. 

If you are around this Tuesday at 1.30pm we are doing more sewing for Design and Technology so please come and join in to support the children.

Sustrans Big Pedal - School Assembly today

 Today in our school assembly we had a visit from Jonathan Dixon, our school’s Sustrans Officer.

 

 

Sustrans is an organisation that promotes the use of Bicycles and Scooters.

Jonathan talked to the children about how to make sure their cycling helmets are fitted properly. He then introduced a special Sustrans event taking place over the next fortnight.
Next Monday sees the start of “The Big Pedal”.
We will be recording the number of journeys to and from school made on Bicycles and Scooters. The data is then used in a national and local competition to see which schools are able to get the greatest percentages of Bicycle and Scooter use during the fortnight.
In the last three years, we have done very well in this event and have been among the local prize-winners.
On Tuesday 21^st March we are holding a “Bike It Breakfast”. All children that come to school by Bicycle or Scooter will be given a breakfast snack, fruit and a drink.

 

YR1 14.3.2017 The Week Ahead

This week in Literacy Year 1 are concentrating on comparing different versions of the Three Little Pigs tale. They will then be rewriting their own version of the Three Little Pigs! I am sure they will produce great writing using a variety of punctuation! Please continue to practise spellings and phonics with your child this week. Additionally, please make sure your child is reading their guided reading books at home (or any other book) to get them reading! So many Year 1’s have progressed in their reading over the last few months it would be great to see this continue…!

In Maths this week, we are concentrating on Addition. We will be creating word problems and problem solving. I know many of do simple addition sums with your child at home, but if you could turn them into word problems that would be fantastic, as it really supports the children’s learning. E.g. 6 boys get on a bus at the first stop, 7 girls get on the bus at the next. How many people are on the bus now?

On Thursday, Spring group will start making their Traditional Tale Puppets! Thank you to those parents have already come in and helped it is much appreciated! If any parent is available this Thursday at 1.30pm to help with sewing that would be wonderful! Please just let one of the Year 1 team know.

YR1 7.03.17 This Weeks Learning

 

As you are aware we had a very exciting day yesterday! We had a Collaboration Day – please check out the pictures on our website (more will follow).

For the rest of this week in Literacy we are concentrating on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We are writing character descriptions and concentrating on punctuation! Please encourage your child to write stories at home and then make sure they bring it in to share with the class!

In Maths this week we are doing Place Value – we specifically looking at reading numbers in words (like seventeen) and writing them in numbers (17), so please get your children writing and reading numbers. Additionally, we are concentrating on the learning ‘one more one less’ so your child will need to know their counting for this! Please practise counting up and down – you could do it in the car to school!

YR1 3.3.2017 World Book Day

Firstly, I would like to say what a fantastic array of costumes we had yesterday! All the children were so proud and it was extremely difficult picking the Best Costume Award, but as a team we finally decided on Roybn as she dressed as Cinderella before she went to the ball! Congratulations Roybn!

We discussed many books yesterday and in particular shared some chapter books with the class! Some of these books will be for your child to aspire to be able to read and others will be accessible to them.

·        Ottoline at Sea by Chris Riddell (there are a variety of Ottoline books)

·        Skulduggery Little Gems by Tony Robinson

·        Mr Pink-Whistle Stories by Enid Bylton (lots by Enid Bylton)

·        Claude Going for Gold by Alex. T. Smith (there are a variety of Claude books)

·        Elephant Child by Mary Ellis

·        Rabbit and Bear – The Pest in the Nest by Julian Gough and Jim Field

Next time you are in a book shop or online look up these titles and share them with your child!

We themed the main part of the day around the picture book, The Pirate-Cruncher by Jonny Duddle – I said Capitan Purplebeard visited the school and captured me so we had to complete the pirate activities to find the treasure and not walk the plank! They really enjoyed the day!

There are lots of other books by Jonny Duddle and he has a similar way of writing as Julia Donaldson so I would recommend his books for your Year 1!

This afternoon the whole school will watch a theatre performance and then on Monday we are having a Collaboration Day! This day will involve the whole school changing classes and working with children in different year groups.
