Last week we used the film Rio to discuss the importance of the blue macaw and wrote some fantastic pieces of information. This week we will be learning about a variety of different animals such as chimps and rhinos so that by the end of the week the children can perform their writing just like a speech from Sir David Attenborough!
In maths we are still partitioning numbers using place value cards and dienes and one cubes. Some brilliant independent work today.
We have started to look at a book called ‘the lost words’ by Robert MacFarlane. This book is a fascinating book highlighting the words that children do not learn about and even some of the words that are vanishing from children’s encyclopedias such as the word acorn and bluebell! Luckily as a nature loving school the children are showing that they are aware of many of these and we can’t wait to read the other poems. Thank you Noah for letting us borrow it!
One last thing. If you haven't given in your money for last week's falconry visit, please can you give this to the office. We have so many exciting learning opportunities for the children and although it is voluntary, if we do not have enough money to cover most of the cost of these then unfortunately they will not be able to happen.
Many thanks
The Year 1 team

Another great week!
The children have had a great couple of days focusing on our Maths learning. We have continued to partition numbers in to tens and ones as well as use vocabulary related to more, less, most, least and equal. We used Charlie Crocodile (who likes to eat the biggest number) to compare two numbers together. Can your child compare two numbers?
In Music, we continued with the 'Animal Boogie' story introducing musical instruments to represent the animals in the story. The children had to work in groups and focus on pulse and dynamics. Can your child remember what pulse and dynamics are?
On Friday morning the children had a fantastic time running the daily mile with local firemen and also got to see the fire engine and hear the sirens! How many laps did your child run?
I hope you all found the letter regarding the Eco - week home learning. The children really enjoyed listening to 'The Bean Machine' story and had some wonderful ideas for their own recycling machines. I can't wait to see their ideas come to life. Can your child tell you about Jack and the Bean Machine?
This weeks class Dojo went to Isaac for his super contribution and attitude to learning - well done!
I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Y1- Can you help name an owl???
This morning we listened to Martin from Xtreme Falconry talk about birds of prey. He bought in a number of birds including a barn owl, falcon, hawk and even a bald eagle! (She was huge). The children learnt about the different types of birds and what they eat. The children knew the word for birds that come out at night but can they remember what the day birds are called?
Martin explained about how this beautiful hawk uses its tail as a brake.
We met this rather impressive bald eagle called Winnie. Her wing span was massive!
We also met this baby Indian eagle owl who was 4 weeks old. This was his first trip out. Martin said that we could name him. We need to think of a name that begins with a B so get those thinking hats on. Any ideas please comment on the blog or even better get your child to draw a picture of one of the birds and their ideas underneath and we can send them to Martin. He has a wildlife sanctuary opening soon at West Stafford which will be a haven for rescued birds.
In other news.... we also had Henry (which is Florence's tortoise) visit us for the day!

Just a reminder that it is Autumn and Winters forest school now which is every Monday. There were quite a few children without their clothes for this today. Thank you for everyone who is contacting relatives abroad, we have had a great response from all over the world! Also it is the year 1 parent information session on Wednesday am in the hall from 9am.

Getting really wild!
What an exciting couple of days.
We have been learning more about the types of diets animals have and whether they would be a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore? Can you find an example of each classification?
We had two exciting visitors, the children were very intrigued and very brave stroking the lizards. Can your child tell you a fact about the Bearded Dragon or the Leopard Gecko?
In Maths we have been partitioning numbers in to tens (T) and ones (O) using deans blocks or Numicon to help us. Can your child tell you have many tens and ones are in 36? Can they tell you about your house number?

This is Steve the Bearded Dragon! |
This is Zeus the Leopard Gecko! |
In music we started a song book called Animal Boogie, the children looked at pitch, dynamics, pulse and rhythm as well as making up a new verse in a small group.
I hope you have a lovely weekend and the sun keeps shining!

Y1- Tarantula skins!
This morning the children got to see some tarantula skins that had been shed. These were fascinating as they looked like the tarantula was still there! The class were grouped in fours today to produce a poster on mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. We learnt all about the differences in the groups of animals.
In maths we have been looking at partitioning numbers so that we know how many tens and ones are in a number. For example what the number 2 in 25 is. They have also been reading and writing numbers to 100.
The beautiful weather is meant to be here for the next fees days! Please can we have the children sun creamed before school and sun hats in. Water bottles will be filled up throughout the day. If you do send sun cream in please give the named bottle to a member of staff as they are kept in a safe place.

Bugfest brilliance!!!
We have had a fantastic start to the Summer term and an introduction to our topic 'Really Wild!' Nick from Bugfest visited us today and bought in some of his crawly friends. It was amazing to hear about the exotic creatures. Below are some of the pictures from the morning. I will put a slideshow of them on the board. All of the children were brave and got to hold some of the animals. I wonder what creatures they could tell you about? Which one has 256 legs? What were the spiders called?

Year 1 around the world challenge
In a few weeks time we will be focusing on a story that looks at postcards. With this in mind we thought it would be good to try and collect as many postcards from around the world as possible!
In class we will look at the countries that they are sent from. So, if you have any friends or family in different parts of the world can you ask them to send us a postcard please. We are hoping to get as many postcards as possible from different parts of the world on them for example we may get a postcard from Dubai! They can be addressed to Year 1 at The Prince of Wales School Dorchester, Maiden Castle road, DT1 2HH.
Maybe they could include a little note to say what it is like where they live? What the weather is like?
We hope you are having a brilliant Easter break and are enjoying the animal research project!
