Healthy living week coming up....

We are looking forward to seeing lots of you for our assembly in the morning.

Next week is our Healthy living week so we will be looking at a number of things that influence having a healthy lifestyle including food, water, sun safety, road safety and exercise. Each morning we will be having an 'exercise blast' to help us prepare our minds for the day ahead. On Monday afternoon we are very lucky to be going to The Thomas Hardye School to partake in a Science afternoon.

On Tuesday morning it is our Sports morning. This will run from 9.20am to around 11am. The children will all need sun hats please as we do not have enough to share around. Please can you make sure you child has a hat, sun cream on and a water bottle every day. We are filling the water bottles up a lot recently and encourage many water breaks.

Many thanks

Our exciting day and a reminder about our assembly on Friday.

Year 1 were very lucky today to be part of the South Dorset Ridgeway celebrations that were being held at our school today. We got to speak to a number of specialists that showed us tools that were once used and pieces of pottery that was found when our school was being built 20 years ago!

We watched an inspiring dance from the Thomas Hardye school and met some funny scientists that taught us about maps and where the ridgeway is in Dorset.

Just a reminder that it is our last class assembly this Friday at 9.20am. After the assembly we would like you to join us in the roundhouse area so that we can share with you what we have been doing up there.

Well done musicians!

A massive well done to all of the children that took part in the recorders or the Ukulele music assembly this morning. All of the children work really hard, practice and are dedicated musicians already which is fantastic!

Thank you to everyone that entered the Art competition. All of our work looks brilliant up in the hall. I hope you had a chance to have a look at it at the end of school today, I will post a picture of our display tomorrow.

Last week the children ended their Art/Science week by making 'bouncy bugs' and clay animals. All of these are in our art display in the hall. At the end of the week we flew our kites. The children worked well together to get the majority of the kites in the air. We did end up having a few tangles but the children did really well to reflect on this experience and think about how they could improve the kites.

This week in Maths we are recapping on time and trying to work out half an hour and an hour later than a given time. We are also going to be doing some races and activities which we are going to time using stop watches.

Bike stunt show!

As the Prince of Wales School won the 'Bike it' week a couple of months ago now we were treated to a bike show by two British champions! The whole school were amazed by the skills the champion showed on his bike.

Our Science and Art week

We have had a busy start to our Science/ Art week. The children have all had the opportunity to make their own kite. Using our kite kits the children assembled the kites using a plastic template, double sided tape, ribbon, cellotape and a straw! Everyone in the school will hopefully be flying these on Friday (depending on the weather).

As well as this we have been making trees from each season using different materials. The trees look fantastic and will be on display on Monday in the hall for you all to see.

The children have also been in our outside area collecting different colours to go on our colour strips. These look really effective and again will be on display on Monday.

The last activity that the children have been experimenting with is the magnets. They have used the Geomag sets and the magnets and cars to move the vehicles and build shapes and objects.

We have many other activities happening throughout the week. I will endeavour to keep you updated!

Jigsaw- Photos please

Next week I am asking if we could have some photos of the children. We will be using these photos in our Jigsaw session next week when we are looking at how we change as we grow older. Ideally we would like a baby photo, a picture of them when they were a toddler and a photo of them starting school or around that age. When you bring them in we can copy them so that you can keep the originals safe. Thank you very much in advance, I know the children will love sharing their photos!

This week in Year 1...

This week we had a scooter afternoon with Jonathan. The children thoroughly enjoyed this and it was good to see them brushing up on their skills of manoeuvring around cones.

This week in Literacy some of the children have been building on their stories from the John Burningham book The Magic Bed. They have been working on making sentences more interesting by adding adjectives, exclamation marks and even speech marks!

In Maths we have been learning how to use our maths skills to work out investigations. This was quite difficult at the beginning of the week but now I think Year 1 are understanding these word problems.

We will have no spellings tomorrow as next week is our Science/ Art week. But please do keep on practising the sounds the children have learnt at home and reading lots as all of this helps the children be able to break down words and spell.

I look forward to seeing all of the entries to the Art competition. Please remember to bring them in on Friday the 19th.

Scooter afternoon tomorrow and some brilliant sketching!

Please remember that it is Bike it breakfast tomorrow and the Year 1 scooter afternoon!

Today Year 1 made animations of the life cycle of a butterfly or a frog. These were amazing and we will hopefully be sharing them in our assembly in a couple of weeks time.

The Prince of Wales school grounds are looking beautiful at the moment. We went outside this afternoon to look at the wildflowers. The children then sketched a selection of these flowers.

Tuesday scooter afternoon

Tuesday is Bike it Breakfast morning. So if the children bring their bikes or scooters they will be treated to a delicious breakfast served by Jonathan from Sustrans.

On Tuesday afternoon Year 1 are lucky enough to be having some scooter lessons with Jonathan. He will be taking children in small groups all afternoon. So please can the children bring in their scooters. If they do not own a scooter then I am sure the children will not mind sharing some.

This means that Winter and Spring will now be doing forest school on a Wednesday and Summer and Autumn will be doing PE and lets explore with Mrs Hall. Please can I remind you that the children will need long sleeve tops, trousers, jumper, coat and wellingtons all in a labelled bag. If it is sunny then they will also need a sun hat and cream on.
