Week 3 in Y1

Hello Year One Families

We have had another very busy week.

We listened to the story of 'Anansi and the pot of beans' and did some great writing about it. We chose what we would put in the pot of beans (instead of beans) and there were lots of very interesting ideas!
In maths we have been learning about counting back and one less.
In Geography we have been learning about Africa and lots of our provision has been linked to this. We have coloured African animals, painted sunsets and added an animal, made Anansi the spider out of different materials. We have honed our fine motor skills by trying to collect items from the spider web amongst lots of other things.
In science we matched animals to their animal groups: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish and birds.
The children had a wonderful time at Forest School this week where they had a bit of a feast. I heard there were oreos, bananas, milk and chocolate!
The class ended the week with a great PE lesson with Miss Johnson. She was impressed with their physical skills in balancing and also their listening skills.
Well done Year One, another fabulous week.

Forest School tomorrow

Hello Year One Families

It has been a very wet week so far and Forest School looks set to be a bit rainy too. Please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing to be outside tomorrow afternoon. They will need wet weather clothes and a pair of wellies.

Thank you.

The Year One Team.

Cursor Control (Skill Revision)

After mixed success last week, we used today’s Computing lesson to revisit and revise ‘HOW TO LOG ON’, ‘HOW TO LOAD PURPLE MASH’ and ‘HOW TO CLICK AND DRAG (CURSOR CONTROL)’.

We used the story Elmer by David McKee and the ‘Elephant’ template within 2Paint on Purple Mash to help us revise this important skill -

Mr Spracklen would advise anyone seeking to revise their cursor control skills at home to give the following game a try -

To support cursor control revision, we advise not using a touch-screen device when playing this game. Instead use the trackpad on a laptop (like we do at school) or a mouse.

WE WOULD ALWAYS STRONGLY ADVISE SUPERVISING YOUR CHILD AT ALL TIMES WHEN THEY ARE USING THE INTERNET.

We would love to see your photos of you revising this skill at home, feel free to email your photos to -

What a week in Year One!

Hello Year one Families

It has been another busy week here in Year One.

In science we have continued our learning about animal groups: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds and fish. We learnt some facts about each animal group and then had a go at drawing some we knew with our friends.

Animals also made an appearance in lots of our 'busy time' learning this week too. We have been learning about the continent of Asia so the children have been colouring and making Asian animals at the playdough, drawing and painting tables this week.

😀

The noodle tray was a big hit this week. Not only is it a staple food in Asia but it is great for developing fine motor skills too!

In maths we have been learning about one more and one less than a number and how to count on from a number (not starting at 1 each time).

In drawing club we finished our 'Dear Zoo' story with some great ideas about what a crocodile might like to eat and adding three more animals to the zoo. The children have been practicing leaving finger spaces between words and spelling the word 'the' correctly.

Ms Johnson was very impressed with the children in DT this week. It turns out we have some adventurous eaters in Year One! The children tried spinach as part of their DT, designing a smoothie. The children also got to eat the tomatoes they had grown in Reception too.

Login details for Purple Mash and Numbots

These will be with you next week.

School trip and events

An email has been sent about our trip to Marwell Zoo trip and a visit from ZooLab. Please do look out for this email.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Unit 1.1 Online Safety and Exploring Purple Mash - Lesson 2

Today in Computing we had a go at drawing a picture using 2Draw on Purple Mash -

Everyone did a great job at giving this a try. Moving forward, we all need a little more practice of using a trackpad (most of us are now very use to using a touchscreen).

This is something that we will work on in the coming weeks. Please try to practice with a trackpad at home as well.

And we're off! Year One has begun!

 Hello Year One Families

What a week we have had! The children have settled in so well and have quickly learnt the routines of the day. It has been so lovely to see how well they work together. The Reception Team have done a fantastic job in teaching them the skills they need to be successful learners: teamwork, confidence to have a go, motivation, making links in their learning to name but a few.

So what have we been up to this week?

In English, we are continuing with drawing club and we have used the story 'Dear Zoo' by Rod Campbell to inspire our writing. We learnt some new and not so new vocabulary: elongated (a firm favourite I hear!), return, captured, disapprove, gift and slippery. There were some great ideas shared for a perfect puppy and a cage to keep an animal in. We are working hard to remember to leave finger spaces between words and to write the word 'the' correctly.

In maths we are working with numbers to ten, focusing on correctly written numbers (0-10), as well as accurate counting of objects. We learnt the word 'represent' and have been 'representing' numbers in different ways; as words, as numerals and in pictures.

In Geography we have started to learn about the 7 continents. We have learnt a song about them - if you ask your child they might remember it! Next week we will focus on Asia.

In science we have begun to learn about animals groups and spent this week learning about reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

In DT we have visited the fruit and veg shop and tasted lots of different things, ready for designing and making smoothies in the weeks to come.

With all this learning happening there is still plenty of time for 'Busy Time' our play-based learning experience too. Lots of the learning links to our curriculum but it is also a great opportunity for the children to develop their own themes and ideas which they are sooooo good at.

                                                             We have painted animals.

Drawn pictures of fruit

 Made animal enclosures.

Looked for the hidden animals in the garden and wrote their names down.

Accurately counted the bears into their houses.

And made the most of the good weather to create, imagine and play in the KS1 outdoor learning space.

We have had a fun-packed first week back at school!

We welcome a new member to the Year One Team: Miss Knight will be joining us 3 days a week as a trainee teacher.

Next week:

Tuesday 12th September at 9am - Parent Information Session in the hall. Come and find out about what happens in Year One.

Timetable changes:
Every Thursday - Forest School
Every Friday PE

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend. We can't wait to see what next week brings!
