Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas Year One Families!🎄🎅🎄🎅🎄🎅🎄🎅

What a fantastic class of children you are! We were absolutely thrilled with their Christmas performances this week, they all did an amazing and professional job! The singing, the costumes, the speaking parts, the dancing - absolutely wonderful! Thank you for your support in providing costumes and coming to cheer them on.

It hasn't just been about the performances this week. We had a brilliant time at the pantomime. The children thoroughly enjoyed cheering, booing and dancing along with the story of Jack and the beanstalk.

The children also enjoyed a festive lunch in the hall with crackers and jokes too!

We also popped up the road to Cheriton Care Home and sang beautifully.
The children were also treated to a festive puppet show.
And finally today we had a visit from the man himself - Father Christmas! What a way to end the day!

Don't forget that tomorrow is party day so children can come in non-uniform. There are no hot lunches so a festive packed lunch should be provided.

We say a fond farewell to Mrs Stockman who will be continuing her training at a different school in the Spring Term. We are very lucky that she will be back with us in the Summer Term to complete her training. She has been an asset to our team and we will miss her.

It has been a wonderful start to our year in Year One. The children are an absolute credit to you all. They have learnt so much and we are so proud of them. We can't wait to see what the Spring Term brings.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas.🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

Christmas is coming!

 Hello Year One Families

It has been another inspired to learn week in Year One. We have thoroughly enjoyed practicing our Christmas show and can't wait to share it with you next week. The costumes are fab - thank you! We know you are going to love it!

We have been learning about Jane Goodall in our English lessons and writing sentences about what makes her a significant person to learn about.

Our maths has been really challenging our brains this week, as we have learnt about adding and subtracting using number lines, part part whole models and number sentences. The children have been working really hard to use number lines, cubes and counters to help them work out the answers. They are also getting really good at explaining their answers which is a key part in showing their understanding. Well done Year One maths brains.

We ended the week with a fantastic Christmas technology day. The children came back buzzing with excitement from each activity they did. We hope you liked the crafts they bought home as they certainly enjoyed making them.

Don't forget to visit the amazing shop front in Brewery Square to see your child's figure they designed and made.

We are planning on visiting the library on Monday to collect a new book for the holidays. We will also issue a new RWI book too. We were extremely busy doing Christmas crafts on Friday to get this done!

As we enter our final week before Christmas here are some reminders about what is coming up. (I can't believe we have nearly got to the end of our first term in Year One already!)

Tuesday and Thursday - 10am - Christmas nativity performance at School.

Wednesday - Carol service at St Mary's Church 5pm -6pm

Friday is party day - please wear party clothes (suitable for the current weather conditions and for going out at playtimes in) and provide a party style lunchbox (wrap their lunch in wrapping paper!) NO hot meals today. The children will then be entertained with a staff led pantomime!

We also have these events happening in school for the children:

Wednesday - Visiting Pantomime company in school, Christmas dinner day and a care home visit to sing carols.

Thursday - Christmas puppet show

We are looking forward to a final, fun-packed week before the Christmas holidays.

Any questions, queries or comments, please do get in touch.

STEM week: Design, Make, Evaluate

 Hello Year One Families

We are back blogging after a brief hiatus! This week has been wonderful! The children fully immersed themselves in our STEM week. The children began the week thinking carefully about who they were going to design their figure for. We talked about what that person may like as a design and colour and the children used these ideas to create a design.

The next job was to investigate the best way to join the materials together. Some children chose a glue gun, others chose a stapler and some chose masking tape. The children tested all 3 and decided themselves which they thought was best.

It was then on to the making. Children used their design to create their outfits. They looked carefully at what they had designed and completed it by adding their logo on to the dress or shirt. They were thoroughly engrossed in this and everyone was so pleased with their finished product.

Finally we completed an evaluation, reflecting on what we would change if we did it again and what we found hard.

In between our STEM learning we have been busily learning songs for our Christmas performance. We hope that your child has been singing them at home to you too!

Design Technology and a couple of reminders

 Hello Year One Families

This week we have really enjoyed the process of designing and making an animal enclosure. Last week we talked about what an animal enclosure would need to have and the sorts of materials we would use to make it. The children designed an enclosure for an animal of their choice, thinking about the sorts of things that animal might need. We took inspiration from our visit to the zoo. This week we have begun to make our designs. The children worked with a partner to share ideas and make their design. We are going to carry on next week as there is still lots to be done! The children really enjoyed it!

Reminders

1. POW passports can be bought to school next week for Mr Spracklen to look at.

2. Reading Records are coming home today and should be returned to school EVERY Friday for staff to sign. Please log in the record every time your child has read. This can be their Book Bag Book or the library book that you have shared together.

4. Friday 18th November is Children in Need. (Non-Uniform day)

Wishing you all a happy weekend.

Year One - The adventure continues!

 Hello Year One families

Did you know that EVERY DAY in Year One is an adventure?!

The classroom now has some exciting new areas of learning that support children's independent skills. We have:

A tinker table that allows children to practice and investigate number knowledge.

A creation station and Tiny Town that focuses on DT and art skills - designing, making and evaluating their models.

A tiny teacher area where children can practice being the teacher, showing others how to read, write and relearn skills and knowledge they have been taught in lessons.

Story kingdom is a comfy spot where the children can share their love of books and stories.

In cosy club the children work with an adult to develop writing and maths skills.

Our outdoor area now has specific areas that develop fine and gross motor skills, language development, critical thinking and number knowledge. The areas are known as: water world, curiosity corner, the builders yard and story kingdom.

EVERY child is encouraged to make their own adventure in these areas and must visit the message centre to write code sentences to bring their worlds to life. The children then stick their code sentences into their own adventure books.

It has been a fantastic start to our half term. We continue to learn about our Wonderful World and have begun to learn about David Attenborough in history and literacy lessons. In DT we will be designing, making and evaluating an animal enclosure. In science we are learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and in maths we are learning to add within 10. Our reading assessments take place this week so your child MAY change groups next week.

I wonder where our adventure will take us next?
