Hello from Y1!

 Hello Year One

Lots of learning has been going on over the last week. Here is a snapshot of what has been happening.

In maths, we are learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. This is something you can practice at home too.

In English, we have a new story called Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children are learning to write adjectives and adverbs in their writing this half term. Their writing goes from strength to strength. 

Last week, we took part in a whole school science investigation. The children became scientists and used bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to create a reaction. It was great fun!

Rocket Club:

Those children that have had invitations for Rocket Club, these start tomorrow (Tuesday 23rd April) for 5 weeks. I think there may have had a mix up with the invites!

Unit 1.7 - Coding: Instructions

In today's Year One coding lesson, we embarked on an exciting journey into the world of programming. With eager minds and a sense of adventure, our young learners delved into the basics of giving instructions and problem-solving through a fun and interactive activity.

At the heart of our lesson was a simple yet engaging scenario: two children playing the roles of a programmer and a robot. The task? To direct the robot safely from one point to another within our learning environment. But here's the catch – the programmer had to ensure that the robot didn't crash into any objects along the way!

As the activity unfolded, we witnessed the creativity and problem-solving skills of our young learners shine through. With each iteration, the children experimented with different routes, adjusted their instructions and learned from any mishaps along the way.

What made this activity truly special was the opportunity for hands-on learning and collaboration. The children worked together, brainstorming ideas, and communicating effectively to achieve their common goal. Whether it was navigating around desks, chairs, or other classroom objects, each successful manoeuvre brought a sense of accomplishment and excitement.

Through this activity, our Year One children not only gained a basic understanding of coding concepts but also honed essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. By experiencing firsthand the process of giving instructions and solving problems, they laid a solid foundation for future exploration and learning in the field of technology.

As we wrapped up our coding adventure for the day, the smiles on the children's faces spoke volumes. They had not only had fun but had also taken their first steps into the fascinating world of coding. 

And who knows? Perhaps one day, some of them will be the brilliant minds behind the next big innovation in technology.
