WOW! What an incredible treat we had today in school. We had a very special visitor come into school to lead a Chinese dragon workshop. The children were utterly INSPIRED and each child got involved which is amazing to see!! It was a great way to continue our China topic.

Here are some pictures for you to see!

Just a quick reminder...it is the launch of Fitness February tomorrow so please send your children in wearing their sports gear (this can be football kits!).

Last week in the Year One classroom and important updates!

Hi all, I hope you've had a great weekend and are ready for another week at the Prince of Wales!

We have had a great week in Year 1 and your children make me so proud with their willingness to learn and attitudes towards learning.

In Literacy we have been focussing on a book called 'Yikang's Day' which looks at a whole day in the life of a child from China. We have been comparing her day to ours and producing some great writing.

In Maths we have just completed our next unit which looked at addition to 20. We will be starting our new topic tomorrow which is about subtraction within 20.

In Science we have been continuing to look at everyday materials and we even incorporated The Three Little Pigs and looked at which material would be best for their house.

The children are now in their new RWI groups. You should have received an email from myself and Mrs Smith about their groups and what they will be learning.

The 1st of February marks the beginning of Chinese New Year! We have some great activities planned for this and I'm sure all of your children will be even more inspired.

I wanted to update you on a few things coming up this week;

- Monday - Chinese dragon workshop

- Tuesday - Start of fitness february (children can wear sports clothes into school!)

- Friday - NSPCC Number Day (children are encouraged to dress up - the theme is Maths!)

- Clubs also restart this week

Any questions about this please let me know!

Maths booklets

Hi all, hope you're all well!

This afternoon all children were sent home with two maths booklets. These look at number bonds to 10 and 20. I encourage all children to work through these as it will benefit them in Maths lessons. I have noticed that children are not as confident with these number bonds.

Please encourage your children to complete these booklets. There is no time limit, however, there is a reward on offer for children who complete them.

Any questions, please email me.

RWI reading books and spellings update..

Hi all, hope you're having a lovely weekend and enjoying a rest!

Just an update about RWI reading books and spellings. As the children have been recently assessed we decided not to send these home as they will be starting new groups on Monday. RWI reading books and spellings will commence again on Friday 28th February. Myself and Mrs Smith will be sending an email to all parents/carers on Thursday about how best to support your child at home.

Any questions, please email me!

RWI assessments and book recommendations!

Hi all,

I just wanted to update you all that this week the children have been assessed in RWI. There has been movement of groups and this will be shared with you in due course. Children will be going into their new groups on Monday. When the RWI assessments take place the main focus is on their secured knowledge of special friends and their fluency/speed of reading. I can assure you that all children are going to be in a group which best fits their abilities.

Also, just a reminder of their home learning this week. If you have any book recommendations please can I have these by the end of the week. You can always email me these if you would prefer.

As always, if you have any questions please email me.

Our parent information session is tomorrow at 2pm. I look forward to seeing some of you there!

Learning in the classroom this week!

Hi all, hope you've had a super week and are looking forward to the weekend. We have had yet another busy week in the Year 1 classroom.

Your children have immersed themselves in our new topic of China and I can see them becoming inspired. They are all so curious to learn more about it.

In Literacy we have incorporated Geography and have been learning about where China is and started to learn about the culture of the country. We also used atlas' to find China on a map.

We have completed our next unit in Power Maths (numbers to 20) and we will be starting addition within 20 on Monday.

We have continued to explore our Science topic of materials and have been looking at their different properties.

Home learning books, RWI books and spellings have come home with the children. Please can you make sure you are practicing spellings at home. Practicing these will support your child's writing within class.

For home learning this week we have set a task for children to come up with book recommendations. We have been lucky enough to have money donated to create a new classroom library and we want to make sure children, and yourselves are involved in the creation of this.

We hope you have a great weekend!

First week back!

Hi everyone, hope you are well and had a great weekend!

Wow, what a great first week back we have had in Year 1. Your children are really throwing themselves back into their learning and showing great attitudes towards this.

Our topic this half term is China and we are all so excited to immerse ourselves in this. We have lots of really exciting things planned for this topic! In Maths we have started to look at our numbers to 20. In Science we are learning all about different materials. Literacy will be linked to what we are learning about in regards to China. In Jigsaw we are starting to learn about Dreams and Goals!

We also have Mrs Dewey who has joined us in Year 1. She is on her teacher training course and will be based with us this term. I know she has lots of exciting ideas and is looking forward to working with your children.

As always, if you have any questions please email me.
