Happy half term!

Happy half term everyone! I hope you have a super week off full of fun and relaxing!

Last week in year 1 was full of fun and excitement. It was a perfect way to end this half term. I can't believe we have half a term left in year 1. However, I am over the moon that I will be moving up into Year 2 with them!!

Last week we have been to Pirate adventure golf and had a Jubilee street party. All of your children were amazingly behaved when we were playing golf, and I could not be more proud of them. They represented the school so well. The Jubilee street party was so much fun and full of festivities that all children enjoyed.

Please ensure you are practicing RWI special friends with your children and home and using the packs that have been sent home. The children have their phonics screening check the first week back, so the more they practice at home will be majorly beneficial. If you have any questions about this or ways in which to support your children more at home, please email me.

Have a great half term, and we'll see you soon!

Last week in Year 1

Hi everyone, I hope you all have a great weekend!

We have had another amazing week in the Year 1 classroom and your children make me proud each and every day.

In Maths this week we have been focussing on division and making equal groups. Any extra support at home with this would be amazing! In Literacy we have been learning all about maps and have also made our own pirate treasure maps. Some children had more than one 'x marks the spot' to trick the pirates trying to steal their loot! In Science we have been continuing with our plants topic. Our radishes that we have planted are growing so well!

Next week we are starting a new topic in Maths - Halves and quarters. I have added in the first pages of this topic so you can see the things we are covering in this topic. Any extra support at home with this would be appreciated!

Next week we are very busy in Year 1. On Thursday we are off on an school trip to Pirate Adventure Golf in Weymouth which I am incredibly excited for! Please ensure all children have a packed lunch as all hot dinners are cancelled on this day. Also, please can you make sure your child has a coat. I'm hoping the weather will be sunny, but you never know! If you haven't already given permission for this trip, please can you ensure this is done before Thursday. On Friday we are having a Jubilee street party to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Children can come into school wearing blue, red and white! If you still have your bunting to complete, these can still be brought into school.

Thank you as always for your continued support!

FANTASTIC YEAR ONE!

Hi everyone, what a FANTASTIC start to the summer term we’ve been having in Year 1!

This week we’ve done our first ‘BIG WRITE’ of the term – our pirate adventure stories. We read The Night Pirates to help us prepare and had fun thinking about all the ‘adventurous’ things we could add into our stories. I’m sure the children have been excited to tell you about theirs. We have loved reading them and it’s great to see so many creative minds in our class.

In Maths we have finished up our unit on multiplication. We’ve been working really hard, but any extra help on this would go a long way, as next week we start on division which is closely linked to multiplication. We will be looking at sharing, so I’m sure there are lots of opportunities to practice this at home!

In Science we’ve been continuing with our topic of plants. We planted our radishes last week and are already starting to see shoots appearing. Hopefully, some might be ready to eat by half-term! This week we learnt about the parts of a plant and created our own plants to label, we were even allowed to write on the tables!

In Art we’re continuing to learn about Andy Warhol and Pop Art. I bet the children can tell you some fun facts about him.

We’ve also been learning about Jesus’ friends, the Disciples, this week and what it means to be a good friend, and thinking about how instructions are used in coding for computers.

It’s never a dull moment in Year 1!

Just a couple of reminders:

  • Please really try to practise those special friends at home. If you need any extra materials from us to help you, please do not hesitate to ask. The phonics screening tests are coming up.

  • As the weather gets warmer and we’re spending more time doing outdoor learning, please make sure your child comes to school with a sun hat.

Have a great weekend!

Last week in the Year 1 classroom

Hi everyone, I hope you've had a super bank holiday weekend!

The first week of the summer term has been amazing and the children have settled back in so well. We have been so busy and I'm sure you have heard about some of the things we have done in the classroom this week.

We have started our new topics of PIRATES, and the children seem so immersed in this already which is great to see! We have created our own pirate and wrote adjectives that link to it.

In Maths we have started multiplication - looking at 2's, 5's and 10's. This can be quite a tricky topic, any support at home with this would be amazing and appreciated.

In Science we have started our topic of Plants and the children are already so knowledgeable about plants. We've learnt about lots of different plants and went on a hunt around the school to spot some!

We had the life education van in this week and learnt all about our wonderful body and how to keep healthy. We also looked at friendships and how we can be good friends. This was very informative and the children were engaged and had fun whilst learning.

On Friday afternoon we launched something called a 'play project'. This is something we have introduced after we visited a school in Wiltshire who executed this amazingly in their EYFS and KS1 settings. The aim of this is for children to lead their own learning which has been planned by the teacher. It links to exploration, imagination, team work, communication and so much more. The children had such a great time and the comments, building, learning that the children were showing was brilliant and I could not be more proud.

Last week Mrs Smith worked so hard to assess all children in RWI. Next week an email will be coming round about which group your child is in and how you can best support at home. I have sent home a phonics screening pack to also help support your child at home with practicing a range of words. More about the phonics screening check will be communicated at the parents information session. Please email if you have any questions about this. Books and spellings were not sent home this week as children are changing groups. These will resume from Friday.

Just a reminder that the Year 1 parents information session will be on Friday 6th May at 9am in the hall.

Also, if you have any recycling at home that could be used for junk modelling please could you bring this is! Thank you.

Thank you as always for your continued support, if you have any questions about anything please email me or catch me in the morning or afternoon!

See you tomorrow!
