Week 6 in Year One

 Hello Year One Families

In Forest School this week the children learnt how to start a fire using flint. They also made dens and then got to cook some cinnamon apples on the fire. They absolutely love these sessions and get so much out of learning outdoors.

This week the children have made the most wonderful animal habitats using the bricks. The children have been playing and exploring with building these for a while now but this week they seemed to really take it to a new level. Great problem solving and sharing of ideas.

In geography Miss Knight taught the children about Antarctica. They learnt about what the climate is like, which animals live there and who might stay there. The children loved the linked activities in continuous provision too.

In science the children learnt about vertebrates and invertebrates. We worked together to discover which animals had a back bone and which didn't.

To round off the week, in maths, the children learnt about number lines. The children worked together to make a big number line, thinking carefully about what they have learnt in maths over this unit: more than, less than and comparing numbers.

Another wonderful week in the Year One classroom!

I am looking forward to meeting you all in person next week at parent's evening. If you have not had a chance to sign up please do it as soon as possible. Or if you are having technical problems, please see Miss Lewis or Mrs Troughton in the school office.

See you all next week.

ZooLab visit

 Hello Year One Families

On Friday we had an amazing visit from ZooLab. Emma showed us lots of fantastic creatures, some of which we got to touch. The children were very interested in what Emma had to tell them and loved learning about the different types of animals. This formed part of our science topic this term, where we have been learning about different animal groups. If you don't like snakes don't look down!

We completed an extension activity on the Chromebooks -

Mr Spracklen was very impressed with the focus and determination we all showed.

Week 5 in Year One

 Hello Year One Families

What a week we had in Year One!

On Tuesday  Miss Johnson took the class, in groups, to the kitchen, where they made smoothies. This is the culmination of their Design Technology unit. The children tasted different fruit and vegetables, designed a smoothie and then got to taste and evaluate it. Every smoothie had to contain one vegetable. The children helped to chop and blend the smoothies and enjoyed tasting them at the end of the session.

In maths we have been learning to use the symbols greater than less than and equal to. The children practiced this by working with a partner and using the symbols to compare the amounts. The children also said the stem sentences too to help them remember what they had learnt. For example: 7 is greater than 3 or 5 is less than 8 or 5 is equal to 5.

In English we have been listening to the story of Ella and the Ocean, a girl who lives in Australia and visit the ocean for the first time. The children are working hard to remember all the things that make up a sentence: capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and red word spellings (he, she, I, was, are) as well as using their phonic skills to sound out words. There is so much to think about when you are learning to write!

Thank you to everyone that came along to the harvest celebrations. We do hope you enjoyed it as much as the children did!

ZooLab photos to follow tomorrow . . . .!

Date for you diary: Exhibition of Learning

Please note that Year One will be having an Exhibition of Learning in the Y1 classroom on Tuesday 31st October at 2.30pm where we welcome you to visit the seven continents with your child.

Week 4 in Y1 Farming and fun!

 Hello Year One Parents

We had a very exciting week last week that included a fabulous Forest School session and a trip to Maiden Castle farm.

In maths we have been learning to use rekenreks, which are a type of mathematical equipment we use for counting. The children are really good at sliding the whole number across.

In Forest School the children made Farmer's Markets and then sold their items to one another. They absolutely loved doing this and Mrs Surtee's our Forest School Leader was so impressed with their language and vocabulary. Well done Y1!

In our busy time, we have been sorting animals into their animal groups. Painting animal prints, making zebras and much more!😀😀😀

On Friday we made our visit to the farm as part of Food, Faith and Farming Fortnight. Miss Johnson and Farmer Hazel were so impressed with the children's knowledge and excellent behaviour on the trip.

Another fantastic week!
