Home learning stars!

I would just like to say a massive well done to all the children that have bought in home learning this week. It is great to see that many children are taking on board what they have learnt at school and trying to do it at home. We have had addition with lego, toys and popcorn home learning. We have had fantastic writing about places where children have visited.

Year 1 love to praise each other and also it is a great opportunity for all the adults to see what the children can do at home. We would like to see more handwriting practice, number formation, orientation, maths work and much much more!

Assembly- this Friday!

Just to remind everyone it is our assembly on Friday at 9.20am. The children have all got lines which they should have taken home today. Please could you practice these at home.

Thank you

Praise and learning in Year 1 this week.

This week in praise assembly we praised the hard work of Rohana, William and Rosa for their Maths and Writing home learning. Miss Richards praised Charlotte and Odette for their Literacy work where they ordered what we did on the farm. Finally Scarlett, Faye and Oona were praised for their maths work.

In Maths this week the children have been adding two numbers together using a number line, lego and mentally. The post game on pupil links is a brilliant game that the children have enjoyed this week.

Following on from our visit from the farm this week the children have been describing the homes they saw at the farm and comparing them to their own. You can see all of the children's fantastic writing on our display just outside our classroom by the hall.

Thank you all for the junk modelling. We do not need anymore at the moment.

We hope you have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing some home learning next week. Maybe the children could write about something they do this weekend? Take a picture of addition using their toys or autumn leaves?

Home learning for next week....

Home Learning

Next week we are going to be looking at lots of different types of houses. We are then going to be writing about our own homes. For us to do that we need a picture of the children's homes. Please could we have a photo of the front of your house. This can be given to us in a number of ways: photo, printed picture, on a USB stick so that we can print it at school or via email. Can we please have these photos by Wednesday of next week (1st October).

And also just a quick reminder that it is our assembly on Friday at 9.20am, looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

POWSA AGM Thursday 23rd October 7.45pm

We know AGMs are not terribly exciting but POWSA does fantastic work raising funds for the school and developing our sense of community. We need new ideas and new faces and new enthusiasm to join our friendly committee of committed parents. We welcome especially parents of new Reception children. Our AGM is on Thursday 23rd October in the staffroom at 7.45pm. Please come along, meet new friends, help the school!

Cow sheds, farm house and stables- A brilliant time had at the farm!

Today Year 1 walked to Maiden Castle Farm. We had an eventful walk as the sheep followed us up the track! It was brilliant to see over 200 sheep trot past us. Once on the farm we looked at the different types of homes. We started with Hazel's farm house and then compared this to the cow shed and the stables. We decided that we all need a roof, bedding, food and water.

Year 1 had lots of questions about the farm animals, especially the cows. I wonder if any of the children can remember why the cows have 2 tags in their ears?

When we were at the farm Hazel had the first batch of honeycomb delivered. The children got to see what bees produce in their homes.

Thank you to all the adults that helped with the trip today. We would like to give everyone an opportunity to come on school trips so please let me know if you are free on our next trip (21st October- Poundbury)

Thank you in advance and we will post some of the freestanding structures that the children build on the blog.

Helpers with reading

Everyday in Year 1 we have phonics and group reading from 9.10-10.10am. We thought we would ask  all parents/grandparents if anybody would be free and willing to come in on a regular basis to read with the children. If you are free and could give up half an hour one day a week please come and talk to me.

Thank you

Mrs Thorpe

Music lessons and clubs in Year 1

It is fantastic to see that so many of the children in Year 1 are interested in joining a club. The children were very excited about tag rugby! If you are unsure of any of the clubs please do come and ask.

This week recorders started with Mr Farrington, the children are encouraged to attend every Tuesday lunch time from 12.45-1.15pm. If the day of this changes we will inform you.

On Wednesdays Mr Farrington holds Wildlife club. Yesterday was very popular and the children have been telling me all about it today. We will be using some of the pears to do some printing with paint tomorrow.

Quite a few parents have asked about Ukulele club today. At the moment the beginners club is for Year 2 and 3. After half term I will start a Ukulele club that children in Year 1 can attend. We can then arrange a suitable time that fits in with hot dinners.

Apple and Apricot parcels

Over the last 2 weeks the children have all had the chance to cook with Mrs Hall. Following one of our Food for Life recipes the children prepared and cooked Apple and Apricot Filo Parcels (with apples from the school trees). They developed their skills in mixing, peeling, chopping and generally preparing food. They were delicious so we thought we would share the recipe below!

If you are finding this hard to read we have lots of copies in Year 1.

Magical story telling dust!

Thank you to everyone that came to the Year 1 Parent information morning this morning. If you were unable to make this there will be a newsletter coming out very soon with a lot of the information in.

In Literacy we started looking at the story of the 3 Little Pigs. Pandora the pixie came in to the class room to share her magical story telling dust!

Once all of the children were sprinkled in story telling dust they were able to retell the story using actions.
This has been fantastic for all of the children to be a part of as they are able to sequence the story verbally and so will be able to write it throughout the week.

Home learning- letter and number formation.

Over the next few weeks we will be setting some home learning challenges for the children to complete at home. These may be linked to maths, handwriting, literacy, reading or generally to our topic.

This week we would really like the children to be practising letter and number formation. We would like to see the children practising this in anyway that you see fit. Ideas such as messy writing in shaving foam, custard, chalk, paint. Or writing with a special pen or coloured paper? If your child does this at home please send us in a picture of the piece of writing. We can then praise this in front of the class and with Mr Farrington.

If you are not sure about how we form our cursive letters please feel free to talk to one of the adults in Year 1 and we can give you a cursive alphabet sheet.

Houses and homes- Literacy, reading and D&T

Last week the children thought of all the things that they wanted to find out about our topic: Houses and Homes. We wrote lots of questions down and we hope to answer them over the term.

This week we are focussing on: The 3 little pigs. The children wanted to find out a bit about the three types of houses that they made. We thought that this was a perfect opportunity to practice retelling the story using a story map and introducing adjectives.

Being able to retell a story is such a skill. In our group reading sessions this week the children will have the chance to play with a range of puppets that we have and work in small groups retelling some well known traditional tales.

In D&T this week we will be carrying on with our rotation so that all children work with myself (Mrs Thorpe) looking at structures, Mrs Hall who will be cooking, Miss Richards who will be looking at the seasons and also an independent group who will be building with construction bricks. Once all children have cooked we will post the delicious recipe on the blog for you all to try at home!

Jigsaw Jack

This week in PSHE we have been thinking about our Rights and Responsibilities. As a class Year 1 have come up with our own class charter that we have all agreed help us learn, develop and feel safe in school. You can see a copy of this on the scroll by the children's trays.

Jigsaw Jack is helping the children understand their feelings and talk within a group. Each week we will celebrate the achievements of one child in our praise assemblies. This week we had to praise someone that has made another child feel welcome.

The special Jigsaw Jack certificate this week has gone to.....Oona! Well done Oona for being so caring and kind.

Sunday 7 September 2014

Our topic starts this week...

This week we will be starting our topic

We will be looking at structures in the school grounds and deciding what materials they are made out of and what makes them strong. We will also be incorporating our topic in ICT this week using purple mash. We will be talking all about our own homes and who lives in them.

This week Mrs Hall will be working with the children to cook one of the recipes from our Food for Life program. The children will be using some of the apples from our trees in the school  grounds to make some delicious pastry based food.
Miss Richards will be working with the children this week in Science. They will be looking at the seasons and how what we wear changes due to the weather.
Group reading books will be coming home this week. On Friday all of the children chose a reading book and a non fiction book. The children can now change these with you in the mornings or after school, they should all know how to scan out their books. We will change them on a weekly basis in our group reading sessions.

Welcome to Year 1- parent information session

The Year One team would like to welcome you all to Year One. It was great to see greet many parents and grandparents this morning and I hope that I have managed to catch everyone to talk to.

We have started our Jigsaw PSHE this morning. All of the children have enjoyed learning how to be calm and share their thoughts. We have also been painting self portraits and writing about the summer holidays.

If your child hasn't already got a named drinks bottle in school please can you make sure they bring one with water in as we encourage the children to drink lots throughout the day. There is fruit available every break time.

Please can you also make sure your child brings a labelled cardi/jumper.

We sent home the new school diaries this afternoon. They have changed since last year and I will be discussing this a little more in the parent information session. The children have also got a laminated computer card which they can keep at home. They will now be able to access reading eggs and purple mash at home.

Lastly, just a reminder that Year 1's parent information session is on the morning of Tuesday 16th September at 9am.

If you need anymore information then feel free to catch myself (Mrs Thorpe) or Mrs Hall in the mornings or after school.
