Half term home learning...

Year 1 Home Learning
Over the half term we would like you to find out-
Before there were cars how did people travel?
You might want to draw a picture, look for some books from your local library or on the internet? A sentence or labelled pictures would be fantastic!

Please bring the home learning in on Tuesday 3rd November.
Thank you. Have a restful week off!

Literacy- What is a vardo?

This week we have been learning about another type of home which is called a Vardo.

All of the children should be able to explain what a vardo is. Can they answer the following questions-

-Who lives in a vardo?
-How does it move?
-What is inside the vardo?

As well as learning about a vardo the children have been painting milk churns, making paper flowers and colouring repeating patterns.

Maths- 3D Shapes

Over the last 2 weeks we have been looking at different shapes. The children have looked for 2D shapes in the environment and counted how many corners and sides they have. This week we have been focussing on 3D shapes. I was really impressed with how many 3D shapes the children remembered and their descriptions of the shapes.

How many different 3D shapes can the children find in their homes? Maybe they could draw some pictures of the objects and write the shape.

Award assembly 22.10.15

Today we had our first of the year ‘Award assembly’. This is the assembly when we ask teachers and their teams to select children who they think have worked particularly hard during this first part of the year in subject areas; writing, reading, maths, ICT, Creative arts, PE and displaying our Citizenship qualities.  Some awards have a certificate and a trophy to keep for half a term! You may have found one of these when you got home!

For our Reception parents; the awards can stay at home with your child until we send a letter inviting it back in for our next ‘Award assembly’.

Happy half term everyone, we will see you all back on Tuesday 3rd November!

Poundbury trip

We have had a brilliant day up in Poundbury today! First of all we went to the Garden centre. Whilst half of the group were looking at the very festive Christmas display, the other half planted bulbs and pansy's. Once we swapped over we had a chance for a quick snack before heading to the park.

After eating our lunch at Matilda's Grandmas we met Steve from C.G Fry's building contractors. The children loved building their own walls using bricks and mortar. Mrs Hall went up in a cherry picker to take pictures of us from an aerial view!

We will put the photos on the whiteboard in the morning for you all to see.

We went to the moon at The Thomas Hardye School!

Yesterday we went to the Thomas Hardye School to do some Science.

We watched the Scientists make rocket fuel for us to get to the moon. Then we tested some sand to see what planet we landed on.

We found what looked like water on the planet. We tested it and this happened!!!

After colouring our aliens in we sent a message back to earth.

It was a brilliant experience for all of the children and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to THS!

Wassily Kandinsky art work

This week we are looking at the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We have started making some of our own abstract art based on the artwork below.

We are going to make a piece of our own art work based on 'concentric circles'.

Autumn trip to the farm

We have had a fantastic trip to Maiden Castle Farm today.

We looked at the different types of houses we can see at the farm and the animals that live in them.
All of the houses had 3 things in common- the animals feel safe there, they have a bed and they can keep dry.
We looked at where the cows, chickens and farmer lives! On our walk around the farm we collected lots of conkers. A big thank you to Hazel or the visit we thoroughly enjoyed looking at the homes, machinery and animals.

Our fantastic master piece and a visit from Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry!!

Well done to all of the children for their fantastic singing in the harvest assembly this morning. They made great farmers!

Thank you for all of your donations of food for our display it looked fabulous

If you didn't get a chance to see our 'leaf faces' display then we took a picture below

As part of harvest celebration each class had to make an edible master piece ours was modelled on a tractor! We harvested apples from our trees and made apple muffins and then iced them to look like a tractor.

We were lucky enough to have a real 'case' tractor come in to our play ground for the children to look at. Thank you to Mrs Hibberd for arranging this visit and GCS for the tractor!

The master pieces were judged and tasted by our very own Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.
Well done to Reception who won the 'star baker' award with their farm yard scene below

Praise assembly this week...

Well done to Isabelle, Josie, Rubi, Inzi and Lilyrose who were praised in assembly this morning. They were praised this week for being conscientious learners, trying extremely hard with their writing, 2s and 5 times tables and for that positive attitude to learning.

Mrs Stickman goes missing!

Wow what a fantastic end to a busy week! In Literacy we have been writing about Mrs Stickman who has gone missing! Stickman has been knocking on his neighbours doors to check if they have seen her. He has visited Buzz, Emmet and Mr Potato head today!

The children have tried incredibly hard with their 2s and sometimes even their 5 times tables this week. When you are out and about this weekend maybe you could try and count things in twos?

We have had so much show and tell which is fantastic! We have said we like to see the lego models and pictures that the children have made but it would be great to have a piece of writing with it.

Hope you have an exciting weekend in the sunshine
