Year 1 - Jolly Postman homelearning

Home learning
On Thursday I gave the children hard copies of this week's home learning which links to our topic of the Jolly Postman. Over the next few days I would like them record the different types of post that are delivered to the household each day. The children have a table to complete, although if your child's home learning worksheet didn't make it home please ask a member of the team and we can give you a replacement.
It would also be very useful if the children could bring in any junk mail and used envelopes that you no longer need plus any named postcards that they would like to share with the class which we will return to you.

Spellings
Spellings for children to learn over the week will continue to be sent home on a Friday with a spelling test being given on the following Friday. If your child has misplaced their spellings please let us know.

RWI
Most RWI groups also set home learning on a Friday. These activities together with listening to your child read to you on a regular basis are designed to help your child practice their reading and develop greater fluency.

World Book day - Thursday 5th March
It will be World Book day on Thursday. On this day the children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite story book character to celebrate a love of reading and literacy. Please don't feel that you need to spend lots of money buying a costume. Home made outfits are always fantastic.

Passports
Mr Spracklen will be having a look at Year 1's passports next week so please feel free to come in and use the passport stamp before or after school.

Other notices

  • Please could all children bring in a named drink bottle for water so that they can independently have a drink throughout the day as they need one.
  • We also encourage children to bring in a healthy snack that they can eat at break time to get them through to lunchtime. We do provide fruit and vegetables at snack time although for some children this may not be sufficient for them as they may not like the fruit available.
  • PE will continue to be on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please could you ensure that your child has a full labelled PE kit including plimsolls.

Have a lovely weekend,

Kind regards,
Ms Browne & the Year 1 team

Welcome back Year 1 - 25th February

Hello everyone and welcome back to school after the February half term. I hope you had a lovely break despite the stormy weather.

The children have settled back into school wonderfully and I have been very impressed with how well they have adapted to my new routines and the classroom layout.

On Monday the children were very excited by two new additions to the class. They have been given the responsibility to teach our new classroom aliens,  Wheebop and Knell about life on Earth and how to be successful learners at the Prince of Wales school. Miss Johnson wowed the children by sharing some incredible CCTV footage of the alien's spacecraft hovering above the Prince of Wales school during half term.

Today we discussed the history behind Shrove Tuesday and we made some pancake batter, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

We have started our new topic which is based around the popular book the Jolly Postman. This delightful book introduces children to letters and we will be using it as a stimulus to learn about letter writing, geography and the history of communication and the postal service.

As the term progresses I will start sending home a weekly home learning activity in addition to the weekly spellings that will continue to be sent home on a Friday. Home learning is optional but it can be a great opportunity for children to continue their learning at home and to begin to develop habits that will help them as they progress through school.

I am aware that some parents have had some problems logging in at home to mathletics and AR reading. If you need us to check or give you a new password or if you would like to discuss anything else please speak to myself or one of the year 1 team.

Kind regards
Ms Browne & the year 1 team

Year 1 - Accelerated Reader

Image result for accelerated reader

Hello everyone,

Today we took all the children down to the library to introduce them to the Accelerated Reader books. Every child chose their first book that they would like to have a read of. After reading their chosen book, children can head on to the Accelerated Reader website (found on the school links page) and have a go at the quiz for that particular book.
We have sent home each child's log in details for Accelerated Reader as well as a card stating the band that they should be selecting books from in the library.
You are very welcome to use the library before and after school to change books as many times as you see fit. Please ensure that for each book read, you complete the quiz online. Points per book are then accumulated over time.
It remains very important that books are in school every day in book bags as these can then be accessed through the week and changed if required. You are only able to take 3 books out from the library so please make sure you return any books you have at home. Thank you.

If anyone has any questions about this please come and see us!
