Hello Year One Families,
What a fantastic week we have had in Year One! The children are settling in brilliantly and are becoming increasingly confident with our new routines and expectations. We have spent time learning how our classroom works, how to look after our different learning areas and, begun our development of becoming an increasingly independent learners.
In Year One, lots of our learning happens through playful exploration and challenges. The children have already been busy tackling our Word Wizard challenges, climbing their Maths Mountains and exploring activities across the classroom. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they begin to understand this new way of working.
English: This week we introduced our new story, Cave Baby, and began thinking about how we build and write sentences. We have been practising saying our sentences aloud before writing them and remembering some of the important features that make a super sentence.
Maths: In Maths, we have been exploring numbers within 10. The children have been identifying different groups, counting objects carefully and making sure that they count each object only once. We have also been thinking about how we can check that our counting is accurate.
Geography: We have begun our new Geography focus on the seven continents of the world. This week, we explored Asia and Africa, using maps and globes to find out where they are and beginning to notice some of their features.
RE: We also introduced RE as a subject this week. Our focus this half term is Christian baptism and we will be learning about what baptism is and why it is important to Christians. If your child has been christened or baptised and would like to share photographs of the occasion with the class, please feel free to email some photographs to me. We would love to look at and talk about them together on Tuesday afternoon.
Computing: There was great excitement when we began Computing! Our first challenge was learning how to log onto our Chromebooks independently. This was definitely a highlight for lots of the children, and they were incredibly proud when they managed it!
Home Learning and Reading: Each Friday, the children will be given an optional small home learning task to complete. Please also try to hear your child read every day. Even a short amount of daily reading makes such a huge difference to their confidence, fluency and progress. If you still have your child's reading record from Reception, please continue to use this. Alternatively, you can use the paper reading record provided.
PE: Our PE day is Thursday with Mrs Thorpe. Children should come to school dressed in their PE kit on Thursdays.

English: Introducing nouns and adjectives and using them to make our sentences more interesting.
Maths: Counting larger groups accurately and learning to count on from any number within 10.
Geography: Continuing our journey around the world by exploring the continents of Europe and Antarctica.
RE: Exploring the question “What is baptism?” and finding out more about what happens during a Christian baptism.
We are incredibly proud of how well the children have begun their Year One adventure. There has already been so much curiosity, enthusiasm and growing independence, and we can't wait to see what next week brings!
