Data in Pictures

Today in Computing, our Year 1 pupils explored how data can be represented using pictures!

We began by talking about how we all travel to school each day. Pupils shared their ideas — from walking and cycling to coming by car or scooter — before drawing their own illustrations to show their chosen mode of transport.

Together, we then used these pictures to create a class pictogram, carefully arranging our drawings into columns on the board. This helped us see the information in a clear, visual way.

Once our pictogram was complete, we became data detectives! Pupils used their new vocabulary — data, pictogram and visual — to help answer questions like:

Which transport was the most popular?

Which was the least popular?

How many pupils are in our class today?

Why might some people choose different ways to travel?

Through this hands-on activity, children learnt that data doesn’t always have to be numbers — it can be pictures too!

Our young learners enjoyed spotting patterns, comparing results and discovering how pictograms can help us answer real questions.

Another fantastic step forward in our #InspiredToLearn Computing journey! 💻✨
