Last week in the Year 1 classroom

Hi everyone, I hope you've had a super bank holiday weekend!

The first week of the summer term has been amazing and the children have settled back in so well. We have been so busy and I'm sure you have heard about some of the things we have done in the classroom this week.

We have started our new topics of PIRATES, and the children seem so immersed in this already which is great to see! We have created our own pirate and wrote adjectives that link to it.

In Maths we have started multiplication - looking at 2's, 5's and 10's. This can be quite a tricky topic, any support at home with this would be amazing and appreciated.

In Science we have started our topic of Plants and the children are already so knowledgeable about plants. We've learnt about lots of different plants and went on a hunt around the school to spot some!

We had the life education van in this week and learnt all about our wonderful body and how to keep healthy. We also looked at friendships and how we can be good friends. This was very informative and the children were engaged and had fun whilst learning.

On Friday afternoon we launched something called a 'play project'. This is something we have introduced after we visited a school in Wiltshire who executed this amazingly in their EYFS and KS1 settings. The aim of this is for children to lead their own learning which has been planned by the teacher. It links to exploration, imagination, team work, communication and so much more. The children had such a great time and the comments, building, learning that the children were showing was brilliant and I could not be more proud.

Last week Mrs Smith worked so hard to assess all children in RWI. Next week an email will be coming round about which group your child is in and how you can best support at home. I have sent home a phonics screening pack to also help support your child at home with practicing a range of words. More about the phonics screening check will be communicated at the parents information session. Please email if you have any questions about this. Books and spellings were not sent home this week as children are changing groups. These will resume from Friday.

Just a reminder that the Year 1 parents information session will be on Friday 6th May at 9am in the hall.

Also, if you have any recycling at home that could be used for junk modelling please could you bring this is! Thank you.

Thank you as always for your continued support, if you have any questions about anything please email me or catch me in the morning or afternoon!

See you tomorrow!

Miss White, Miss Bridge, Ms Dainton, Mrs Howell and Mrs Hibberd x
